L’Enfant Sauvage Songs Ranked
L’Enfant Sauvage (French for “The Wild Child”) is the fifth studio album and major label debut by the French progressive metal/technical death metal band Gojira. It was released 26 June 2012 via Roadrunner Records. L’Enfant Sauvage is partly inspired by François Truffaut’s film of the same name, which tells the true story of Victor of Aveyron, a child who was found alone in the woods with behaviors closer to a wild animal than a civilized human. “We are part of this world. And also there is this idea that an enfant sauvage, a child that grew up in nature, is not confronted with others, with emotions, with guilt and identity, so it would be a state where you are closer to the essence of things.” Gojira was going to tour with Lamb of God and Dethklok, but because of Randy Blythe’s arrest in the Czech Republic, the tour was cancelled. Gojira subsequently announced a headline tour of their own, which began in January 2013 with support from The Devin Townsend Project and The Atlas Moth. Here are all of L’Efant Sauvage songs ranked.

13. My Last Creation
“Gojira is such a strong band that has such an unique sound when it comes to Metal. I know that may seem like a difficult thing to imagine in today’s metal scene, but it’s true. Their sound gives a lot more focus to it’s instrumentation than it does to it’s vocals.”
12. This Emptiness
“They take all the elements that were present in their first four albums and blend them into what is now “L’Enfant Sauvage.” Considering this is their fifth album it’s amazing to see just how fresh they sound. Now I realize it may seem like that because I’m still fairly new to the band, but either way I’m sure there are others who could agree with me.”
11. The Wild Healer
“While nearly all the songs are marked with the indelible Gojira riffs, there is a good deal of experimentation going on here. The very brief instrumental track “The Wild Healer” finds the band exploring different sound shapes and adding denser arrangements to the heart of the album”
10. The Fall
” The final song “The Fall” starts out like it announces the beginning of World War 3; in its middle, it blends chanted vocals with blood-curdling death growls before dissolving into pure white noise as if waking you from your worst nightmare.”

9. Pain Is a Master
“Pain is a Master” suggests it’s the most minimalistic piece on the album due to its dreamy intro and soft, barely audible female spoken vocals. However, it reveals its true identity as it turns into a brutal and savage piece impelled forward by blast beats and molten shards of groove-inflicted guitar work.”
8. Mouth of Kala
“This is another ‘sleeper’ band that is slowly building their fan base and hitting on all cylinders. This darker approach to the music really drives it in. This CD is really really strong.”
7. Planned Obsolescence
“Planned Obsolescence” starts out like an old-school death metal number, accentuated by octopus drumming and bone-crushing riff work, but a beautiful textural element is distilled into the finale.”
6. Born In Winter
“Born in Winter” is another experiment for Duplantier: his voice is enriched by the wide, crystal clear acoustic passages and a steady drum beat. One of the best of the year from a band that continues to push boundaries. Gojira is the future of Metal.”
5. Liquid Fire
‘The bass-centric “Liquid Fire” boasts an intoxicating guitar riff that is epic in scope and brilliant in execution. Liquid Fire is one of the most emotional songs I have ever heard. I feel like I am a huge eagle flying over the mountains during this whole song. While the music is incredible, the vocals really take center stage.”

4. The Axe
“The singing on the epic “The Axe” is staggering and works particularly well with the stop-start riffing, which is arguably the best and most headbang-inducing riff on this album.”
3. Explosia
“The stream of melodious riffing of the opening track “Explosia” is broken down into hypnotic instrumental passages informed by an enchanting clean guitar harmony which slowly morphs into a repetitive guitar drone cast over a landscape of sound textures and background effects towards the finale.”
2. L’Enfant Sauvage
“L’Enfant Sauvage (roughly translated as The Savage Infant) retains all the characteristics of the Gojira sound their fans have come to love and respect over the years. It just puts on display another side of their current sonic vision. On first listen, the songs may feel like they lack a clear melodic focus or the maelstrom of fierce riffing complemented by aggressive vocals.”
1. The Gift of Guilt
“The Gift of Guilt” is possibly their most modern-sounding song to date. It accentuates a very clean vocal part, which is constantly pushed back in the mix and then brought to the front again.”
