Lovesexy Songs Ranked

Lovesexy is the tenth studio album by American recording artist Prince. The album was released on May 10, 1988 by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album was recorded in just seven weeks, from mid-December 1987 to late January 1988, at Prince’s new Paisley Park Studios, and most of the album is a solo effort from Prince, with a few exceptions. The lyrical themes of the record include positivity, self-improvement, spirituality, and God. Lovesexy was accompanied by the critically acclaimed Lovesexy Tour, of which the September 9th Dortmund show in Germany was released on videocassette and LaserDisc. It was also televised (with a short delay for editorial purposes) on several European channels, with the broadcast containing various alternate camera shots in place of the ones used in the officially released video, which was released a year later in 1989. Here are all of Lovesexy’s songs ranked.

9. Eye No

“Eye No” starts out by declaring “rain is wet/sugar is sweet/clap your hands/and stomp your feet”. After Prince himself declares over a psychedelic chorus that his voice sounds so clear because “there’s no smack in his brain” this intensely percussive funk groove-built around a dancing high bass line and Atlanta Bliss’s joyous muted trumpet solos.”

8. Dance On

“Dance On” has a wild, high octane funk drumming and again a wall of rock guitar and bass seeming to bubble from below, but never to the front of the song with it’s gospel/soul organ led vocal chorus.”

7. Alphabet St.

“Alphabet Street”,one of my personal favorite songs of his and this albums main hit. Starting with some of the greatest funky drum/rhythm guitar I ever heard,a bluesy bass line introduces one of the many breaks which define the song.”

6. Lovesexy

“A great title track that adds a bit of mystique to Prince’s already engagingly-quirky persona. No one can scare you or please you the way Prince can. by this point you’re along for the ride and you’re not getting off until the album stops.”

5. Glam Slam

“Glam Slam” starts out with a lightly percussive Arabic type melody with a Latin rock style guitar solo before going into a more new wave rock style melody that isn’t at all far removed from  Little Red Corvette”

4. When 2 R in Love

“This track on Lovesexy fits into the mood where on the black album it did always sound a bit out of place to me. This album is a masterpiece and one of Princes last classic albums of the 80s”

3. Anna Stesia

“A beautiful song that can’t really be explained by words, it touches your soul. it’s like an aural waterfall, a baptism and the most uplifting song he had done up until that time. “Anna Stesia” is a pensive, piano based jazz/pop type number with some unexpected major/minor chord transitions.”

2. I Wish U Heaven

“I Wish You Heaven” is a somewhat ethereal arena rocker type with a powerful chorus while the closer “Positivity” is a jazzy, cinematic psychedelic soul/funk number with a gospel-type chorus at the end.”

1. Positivity

“A brilliantly written ode to what makes us human and how everything can be positive if we only have faith and by the end of the album as it starts to fade you’ll realize you’re not just a fan you are now part of his inner circle, those who get his albums and those who love the strange yet satisfying journeys that he takes you on.”
