Magica Songs Ranked

Magica is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Dio. A concept album, it was produced by frontman Ronnie James Dio and released on March 21, 2000, through Spitfire Records. The album marks the return of guitarist Craig Goldy, who also has performed on Dio’s album Dream Evil and in the later release Master of the MoonMagica also features Jimmy Bain on bass and Simon Wright on drums. The album was originally planned to be the first part of a trilogy of concept albums. Shortly before beginning his tour with Heaven & Hell, Dio announced his intention to start the Magica II & III album after the tour’s end, but he died shortly after of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010. The only song released from Magica II & III was titled “Electra” Here are all of Magica songs ranked.

14. The Magica Story

“Dio telling the story in spoken form. Very, very interesting to listen to! I love this “track”, I have listened to this story so many times. He was such a great writer… Rating this is really… well there is some background music there so what the hell “

13. Discovery

“Only to start off the story, the robots find the book of Magica and start to unravel the history of the people that lived there long long ago. Can’t rate this really, neatly done though.”

12. Magica Theme

“After all these years and several mediocre albums Ronnie James Dio pulls out all the stops to produce what is in my opinion the best album of his career. “Magica” is a concept album that tells a story from beginning to end”

11. Magica (Reprise)

“Just when I didn’t think this song could have been better, Dio added lyrics. I can’t find words to describe how good this sounds, I won’t even try”

10. Otherworld

“Tale of the “Otherworld”, some kind of hell where the souls of the slayed citizens of Blessing are thrown. Haunting lyrics, dark atmosphere and just plain awesome tune.”

9. Lord of the Last Day (Reprise)

“From a musical point of view, Magica is classic Dio in sound. Some of his previous albums were seen as venturing into new territory but with the return of Craig Goldby on guitar the 80s sound makes a welcomed return. Bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Simon Wright also return to the fold and rounding out the group is keyboardist Scott Warren.”

8. Eriel

“Tells the story of Eriel of course. Very nice keyboard intro, extremely well-written song structure and great, dark production. The lyrics are… do I even have to mention them anymore? 😀 I think you get it. This is a well-written concept album, not some loosely connected hit songs/attempts at hit songs/fillers stapled onto each other. There are no flaws here”

7. Turn to Stone

“Riff-wise a bit more straight forward, yet a great tune instrumentally with great solo and extremely powerful, dark sound. The lyrics are in their own league, as is common for Dio. They tell the story about how the good citizens of Blessing are turned into stone to feed the dark powers. Now is that some political critizism or what?”

6. Challis

“More rock n roll and less epic than Eriel, yet still a great great tune. Tells the story kind of from Challis perspective, but mostly reflects the anger he feels, along with belief in his own powers. Great song overall.”

5. Lord of the Last Day

“Extremely dark song, kind of like Dio-Sabbath and how “Dehumanizer” might have been if they hadn’t gone for a more straight forward political and aggressive tone. I love this one, was my alarm signal for a long time, I loved waking up to “I love the night… so many shadows…”.

4. Losing My Insanity

“Very interesting twisting lyrics, great melodies, not as strongly connected to the theme as the previous songs but it’s still there. An spectacular opening like medieval folklore music, and how they get down is awesome.”

3. Feed My Head

“Even darker in a way. Has one of those “Country Girl” moments, where everything calms down and Dio sings something in the lines of “Let me be nowhere, just another star…” etc. Extremely crushing yet emotional song.”

2. As Long As Its Not About Love

“The ballad of the album, covering Eriels feelings for Annica. This is great stuff, the lyrics are extremely touching, showing that this is indeed our world’s greatest poet we are listening to. Craig Goldy showcases some extremely sensitive guitar playing as well, and the band in general is just flawless.”

1. Fever Dreams

“Really inventive and interesting riff, love that one. The lyrics are just smashing, I can’t find any fault at all in this. The solo is incredible, the atmosphere is perfect. Illustrates Eriel’s pain he has to endure, being affected by the dark lords magic.”
