Maz & The Phantasms turn tour chaos into surf-punk gold on ‘PIGEON SONG’
Glasgow Southside outfit Maz & The Phantasms fully embrace the absurd on their brilliantly chaotic new single ‘PIGEON SONG’, a surfy, loud and gloriously unserious release born from DIY touring madness and a spectacularly misunderstood lyric.
Led by Catalan-Egyptian songwriter Mariam El Sadr alongside bandmates Jamie McKay, Toby Valentine and Jude NS, the group have spent the past few years building a reputation across the Scottish live circuit through relentless performances and explosive energy. And that same loose, unpredictable spirit runs directly through this track.
Originally built around a riff the band had struggled to finish, the song finally found its identity during a scrappy European tour stop at Point Lafayette, a tiny basement venue where exhaustion, repetition and one extremely drunk audience member accidentally changed everything. After hilariously mishearing the lyrics mid-set, her version was apparently so ridiculous the band immediately abandoned their original idea and committed fully to the chaos.
The result is a sharp blast of garage-surf punk packed with ragged charm, noisy hooks and the kind of humour that only comes from bands genuinely enjoying themselves. ‘PIGEON SONG’ feels intentionally messy in all the right ways, capturing the sweaty unpredictability of underground touring life while refusing to take itself remotely seriously.
