Memphis May Fire Albums Ranked

Memphis May Fire is an American metalcore band formed in Denton, Texas and currently signed to Rise Records. The band currently consists of lead guitarist Kellen McGregor, lead vocalist Matty Mullins, bassist Cory Elder, and drummer Jake Garland. Formed in 2006, they have released six studio albums and two EPs to date. Their fourth album, Unconditional, debuted at No. 4 on the US Billboard 200 and atop the Alternative Albums chart. The band, founded by original vocalist Chase Ryan, guitarist Ryan Bentley and bassist Tanner Oakes, formed in 2006 in Denton, Texas., but it was not until February 2007 that the group solidified the name Memphis May Fire having previously gone by Oh Captain, My Captain. In early 2007, the band recorded and self-released an EP, and began creating a local following. Shortly thereafter, Memphis May Fire caught the attention of Josh Grabelle, the president of Trustkill Records. Grabelle commented on his feelings toward the band in a press release stating, “There is a lot of really exciting, young, dangerous music coming out right now, and Memphis May Fire are the cream of the crop. Not since Bullet for My Valentine’s Hand of Blood have we heard a more compelling set of songs for an EP, where absolutely every song is bone-chillingly perfect, and timeless. These guys are on their way to something huge.” In September 2007 the band had officially signed to Trustkill, and their self-titled EP was reissued through the label in December 2007. From 2007, through 2008, the band embarked on Twelve Gauge Valentine’s final-tour along with The Handshake Murders. Here are all of Memphis May Fire albums ranked.

6. Between The Lies

“This is good, no doubt, but it’s a complete re-hash of what other bands have been doing for years. I’m disappointed that they chose to remove the southern rock aspect to their music as it brought something at least a little bit different. If you don’t mind hearing the same post-hardcore/metalcore stuff that bands have been playing since 05 or so, then you will like this.”

5. Sleepwalking

“A bit of a continuation from their debut EP with the southern rock influence to it. Missing the old singer, but the new guy is pretty good. Good listen but the first EP is better.”

4. Challenger

“It’s very cookie cutter and derivative, which is hardly a shocker since they dropped all traces of their southern sound a while back and now they just sound like everyone else. At this point in my music listening life, I am through caring about originality. There is just too much music out there for every single band and album to be original. It’s impossible.”

3. Unconditional

“While Memphis May Fire do not incorporate many new ideas or stylistic changes in their latest outing, Unconditional is a shining example of a fun and simple album created by a band that is content to keep doing what they know their fans will enjoy.”

2. The Hollow

“Wow, what a great album and definitely their heaviest and most aggressive work to date. I can’t help but be mildly disappointed though. I loved the southern sound they brought on the Memphis May Fire EP and Sleepwalking. This is just straight forward metalcore/post-hardcore. It’s been done before. That said, it’s still awesome stuff. Extremely derivative but oh well. I can’t deny how good this is and must admit it’s their best full length. I still like their debut EP better though.”

1. Broken

“To be honest, I didn’t care too much for Memphis May Fire when I first heard them. I think they were just a little too metal-heavy for my tastes. However, I gave this album a listen to when it first came out and absolutely loved it! I think they changed their sound a little bit which suits me just fine. I know most of their fans seem upset by the alteration in sound, but I am now a huge fan because of this album. Exactly my style!”
