Milk St. go full-throttle on brilliant new single ‘Toyota Corolla’
New England alternative rock outfit Milk St. come roaring back with ‘Toyota Corolla’, the final single ahead of their forthcoming third album Good Grief.
Led by songwriter Jonah Wakefield, the track captures everything compelling about Milk St.’s increasingly unpredictable sound. What begins with the band’s trademark self-deprecating lyricism soon bursts open into a huge guitar-driven finale, piling bombastic riffs onto an already infectious foundation.
At its centre is the wonderfully understated comparison: “In your head I am a limousine – I always thought it was more of a Toyota Corolla.” It’s classic Milk St., insecurity turned into humour, humour turned into something strangely poignant, and eventually all of it swallowed by glorious noise.
There are flashes of The Flaming Lips, Pavement and Modest Mouse in the band’s ability to make emotional unease feel colourful and exhilarating, but ‘Toyota Corolla’ carries a personality entirely its own.
