Savage Garden Songs Ranked

Australian pop duo Savage Garden have taken the world by storm without the record company hype and career-establishing game plan that is often the background for pop-oriented acts. Daniel Jones comes from a long line of musicians. When he was ten, he was already playing the keyboard and drums in bars and hotels. Darren Hayes’ show business experience extended no further than his involvement in many school plays. When Jones and the band he’d started with his brothers advertised for a singer, the inexperienced but enthusiastic Hayes was the only hopeful to answer. He wasn’t what was needed for a covers band playing the Gold Coast resort area of Queensland, but Hayes inspired a different flame in Jones and the pair broke away to start writing original songs. Here are all of Savage Garden songs ranked.

10. Tears of Pearls (Savage Garden, 1997)

“After one of the strongest 3-song album openings since the Joshua Tree or Nevermind, it’d be natural the 4th would be somewhat of a letdown. There’s nothing wrong with the song since the beat is perfect for the dance floor but after the last 3, it seems like a step down but still a good one.”

9. The Animal Song (The Other Sister, 1999)

“Amazing composition with perfect lyrics and fairly good vocals. Makes me feel free and alive. Who doesn’t wanna live like a animal! Catchy, upbeat, singing is as good as ever and can’t help but be put in a good mood when listening to it.”

8. Chained to You (Affirmation, 1999)

“Chained to you, one of the few uptempo songs included in the 2nd SG album…It makes you want to stand up and you can just picture the image of you being seduced by someone you’re totally attracted to..”

7. Break Me Shake Me (Savage Garden, 1997)

“A very angry, angsty song where Darren and Daniel let their emotions out into the open through the music as well as the lyrics. While it seems like they’re trying to control themselves in the verses, the pent-up fury is released in the choruses accompanied with crashing electric guitar riffs. This song may take some time getting used to, but it is good.”

6. Affirmation (Affirmation, 1999)

“Oh so true what they say about this song! it took along time for a Pop band to finally summarize the careers of the greats in one in your face message! Simple lyrics that make the most sense out of all the poets! A very true song about beliefs. It’s rare in the music world to sing what you believe in, and it’s also an energetic song.”

5. I Want You (Savage Garden, 1997)

“The song to play when you’re playing sports or travelling in your car, this song just screams to be turned up and have you work out or something. Fast vocal delivery, an effective and simple guitar arpeggio, this is the song to crank up. My one thing: what’s with that yelping/dog noise in the bridge”

4. Crash and Burn (Affirmation, 1999)

“The song that tell me that I’m not alone there still here to help me when I’m down. The song can calm me. This song hit me at the heart. It’s a feel good inspirational song.”

3. I Knew I Loved You (Affirmation, 1999)

“This has to be the signature song of any couple who are truly in love and have found their life partner. Affirmation is a brilliant song too. This is one amazing track. I have loved Savage Garden so much all this time because they made something as awesome as this.

2. To the Moon & Back (Savage Garden, 1997)

“The album begins with this synth-driven tune, with a more atmospheric slant and it makes great use of the sonic landscape and seems like it’s in its own little world. Even the Spanish guitar solo doesn’t sound out of place.”

1. Truly Madly Deeply (Savage Garden, 1997)

“A Savage Garden classic that showcases Darren’s famous falsetto, accompanied by beautiful Spanish classical guitar. Everyone has heard this song at least once in their lifetime. It is truly a song of deep meaning and emotions, and I must say, to find another song with a melodic quality such as this song, is impossible. Its lyrics are pure innocence, and its melody makes you melt. This song is one that helps me enjoy sadness, love, and happiness.”
