Sea Lions come roaring back with new album ‘Another POP! Music’

Sea Lions could easily have treated their second album as a nostalgia exercise. Instead, ‘Another POP! Music’ is the sound of a band returning with a bigger palette, sharper instincts and a far more adventurous idea of what indie-pop can be.

The Oxnard group first made their name with the twangy, shambolic charm of their 2011 debut ‘Everything You Wanted to Know About Sea Lions but Were Afraid to Ask’. Now more than a decade later, that character is still there, but it has grown into something far richer. Psychedelic touches, mood pieces and slower ballad-like moments now sit alongside the jangling melodies, giving the record far more emotional range.

Lead single ‘Can’t Say No’ captures that evolution beautifully. Sea Lions retain the looseness that made their early material so appealing, but there’s now a stronger sense of depth around it. Guitars feel hazier, the arrangements more deliberate, and the songwriting more introspective without ever losing its pop instinct.

Sea Lions haven’t polished away their personality in the name of maturity. Instead, they’ve learned how to stretch it. The scrappiness remains, but it now rubs up against dreamier textures and more thoughtful pacing, making the album feel both familiar and completely refreshed.

Released through YAY! Records, this long-awaited return is less about picking up where they left off and more about discovering what they might always have become.

Warm, colourful and full of renewed imagination, ‘Another POP! Music’ is a hugely welcome comeback from a band that sounds more alive than ever.

Sea Lions’ new album ‘Another POP! Music’ will be available to stream from the 25th September via YAY! Records.
