10. Catch the Breeze (Catch the Breeze, 2004)

“This is so subdued and neurotic. The lyrics or hardly understandable even if you had your Oxford dictionary by your side. You can barily comprehend what they said at all. What is good is that this is shoegaze, who cares about understanding the lyrics when you or so cool. These dudes could go outside and fart and make a good song I think. This is spectacular. The hooks or beautiful, the music is intoxicating, and the vocals or like the Smiths kind of. Whats more you want”

9. Dagger (Souvlaki 1993)

“He isn’t able to feel, he is numb and is only now realizing how much he hurt someone. she loves him but left him and being alone is the loudest silence ever. he sees himself as nothing but a cause for her pain.”

8. Here She Comes (Souvlaki 1993)

“Song after song of pure distilled emotion, warm enveloping vibrations, word after word drawing you into this liquid beauty. Richly textured and layered yet immediate in its feelings, this is, in a quiet and gently melancholy way, one of the most beautiful albums I’ve ever heard. There are some songs on here that are almost shockingly perfect, if you weren’t far, far too lulled into your feeling to be shocked.”

7. Star Roving (Slowdive, 2017)

“More than twenty years after the band initially split up, Slowdive are back with new material. They have, of course moved on since then, and whilst they have maintained their sound and production, Star Roving is much more driven and up-tempo than their previous material. It doesn’t quite hit the highs of their early singles but is nevertheless a great track on its own accord, and I’ll be surprised if this doesn’t turn out to be one of the finest singles of 2017.”

6. 40 Days (Souvlaki 1993)

“Describes the fighting that ensues in relationships and its hapless attempt to express itself creatively. “You said you’re always sleeping” (where one is hazy) and so the narrator threatens to leave her “if so” but he never truly can because, after a month or two misses her so much. When he eventually breaks it off, he muses “40 days and I miss you” – he misses being high with her in the summer after dumping her. An eloquent depiction of fleeting love, usually combining the imagery of drunk college students who have no idea what they’re doing with their Lives (very classic Rachel & Nick).”

5. Sugar for the Pill (Slowdive, 2017)

“Well, I can certainly see the appeal. I felt a lot more relaxed after listening. The instrumental feels like I’m drifting through a psychedelic tunnel. However, I’m not a huge fan of psychedelic tunnels. The vocals I feel blend in nicely and are the standout for me. Finally, I’m not sure about the ending. I was expecting a rising crescendo line, similar to the cover of The Sound Of Silence by Disturbed (Why I did I had legitimately no idea).”

4. Machine Gun (Souvlaki, 1993)

“I always thought the name of the song referred to the fact that when Neil sings “Son of Sheba” it sounds like “saw a machine gun”. I can imagine that in early rehearsals that’s what people said, and the name stuck. It’s quite suitable and striking considering the suicidal theme of the song.”

3. Souvlaki Space Station (Souvlaki, 1993)

“So per the band in a recent documentary, this song is Rachel’s breakup song towards Neil. Neil’s breakup songs to her were 40 Days and Dagger. So much drama! Such good music.”

2. When the Sun Hits (Souvlaki, 1993)

“It seems like almost all the songs on souvlaki are love songs. then the fact that rachel and neil broke up before the writing and recording of the record and most songs are written by neil anyway. gives you a little insight into what these songs could be about.”
