So What Songs Ranked

So What is the third studio album by the American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Walsh. It was released in late 1974 on ABC-Dunhill Records. It contains hard rock songs such as “Welcome To The Club” and a remake of the Barnstorm track, “Turn To Stone”. It also contains more introspective material such as “Help Me Through the Night” and “Song For Emma”. On a few tracks, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Randy Meisner of Eagles contributed backing vocals. Over a year and a half later, Walsh would be drafted into Eagles to replace founding member Bernie Leadon, playing on their best-selling studio album Hotel California. Here are all of So What songs ranked.

9. All Night Laundry Mat Blues

“The only true clunker is “All Night Laundry Mat Blues,” one of his first flashes of the kind of jokey party crap that would ultimately derail his career, Mercifully, it is very short. All Night Laundry Mat Blues’ is a filler, but fun.”

8. Welcome to the Club

“I first heard “Welcome To The Club” being played by a bar band in ’74; I had no idea where the song came from but I went back the next week just to hear the same crummy band play that same cool song. When I found out it was a Joe Walsh tune I ran out and bought the album simply for that song…what a bonus the rest of the album turned out to be.”

7. Turn to Stone

“Turn to Stone is a good example how Walsh was evolving his sound from the James Gang days. This is a very well done album. Walsh updates Turn To Stone from his Barnstorm album, and the version here sounds great, even better than the earlier one.”

6. Falling Down

“Hard to believe as it may seem given the has-been caricature that Joe Walsh has became well over a decade ago, but he was once considered to be one of the most progressive forces in rock music.”

5. Help Me Through the Night

“The emotionally-charged Help Me Through The Night which is just a great song, made even better by those gorgeous Eagle harmonies. I ‘can’ hear bass and drum parts more – particularly on “Help Me Through The Night”

4. Pavane

“Joe teamed up with a great group of musicians for the recording of So What, and album where any track could have easily been inserted into the legendary James Gang Rides Again, making it both a step forward, and at the same time securely in line with some of the greatest music Joe has ever laid down.”

3. County Fair

“Imagine Joe Walsh at a yard sale looking through the worn items for sale. Items that were once new and useful are now no longer needed or wanted and just in the way. There’s a subtle sadness there, and Joe would surely notice it. He notices things things like that, and writes songs about the sorrow and irony of those inconspicuous realities.”

2. Time Out

“Time Out is another blast of slide guitar brilliance with humorous lyrics about life on the road, high-flying harmonies from Henley, Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner and lots of thunder from Joe Vitale’s drums.”

1. Song for Emma

“Song For Emma” always makes me cry. Thanks for sharing the story about Emma being Joe’s daughter – I didn’t know that. It’ll probably make me cry even more the next time I hear it! “Song For Emma” unquestionably catapult this into classic status.”
