Sob Rock is the eighth studio album by American singer-songwriter John Mayer, released on July 16, 2021, by Columbia Records. The single “New Light”, released in May 2018, is included on the album, as are Mayer’s two singles from 2019, “I Guess I Just Feel Like” and “Carry Me Away”. The lead single “Last Train Home” was released on June 4, 2021, and features guest vocals from Maren Morris. Mayer toured the United States with Dead & Company from August through October 2021 and will embark on a solo tour in support of the album in 2022. Sob Rock received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 70 based on 9 reviews, indicating a “generally favorable” reception. 10. All I Want Is to Be With You
” ALL I WANT IS TO BE WITH YOU, there is a beautiful country ballad. Only the proximity of the chorus to Backstreet Boys I WANT IT THAT WAY didn’t have to be. Otherwise, it’s a hammer song and a great conclusion. In the end, there is a beautiful solo part that invites you to dream of.”
9. Why You No Love Me
“Even before I heard the album, for some strange reason I knew that “Why You No Love Me” was going to be my favorite. I don’t know why I knew this, but maybe I’m just so attuned to John’s music now that I’ve developed superpowers around it.”

“John Mayer is a gifted musical artist: exceptional song writer, fabulous guitarist, with his own unique vocal style. Sob Rock is a very fine album that adds to the rich legacy of the John Mayer catalogue. A really nice collection of songs!”

7. Shouldn’t Matter but It Does
“The ballad SHOULDN’T MATTER BUT IT DOES that Mayer sings very emotionally. Not an alien ballad but a damn good one you just want to hear again and again. NEW LIGHT came out in 2018. Overall, I don’t like the song. Interchangeable world pop for me, even if the song is celebrated by the trade press. Tastes are just different.”
6. Wild Blue
“Most people online seem to love best the Dire-Straitsy sound of “Wild Blue.” That song is also quite beautiful and I can’t help thinking of “Sultans of Swing” when I listen to it. My favorite lyric in the album (so far) is the last one in the song: “And you’ll never know / The unlikely beauty in letting you go” – just a gorgeous lyric!”
5. Shot in the Dark
“With SHOT IN THE DARK, a beautiful, shallow pop rock song follows again. Sang very melancholy. Nice backing vocals at the end. The song fades out instrumentally. Right for dreaming. Pop rock as it best.”

4. Last Train Home
“LAST TRAIN HOME also starts. I think of a beautiful, shallow and memorable pop rock number, accompanied by great keyboards. At the end of the chorus, the mentioned Maren Morris sings, accompanied by a great guitar solo. It’s a pop rock song at its very best. Great number.”
3. Carry Me Away
“CARRY ME AWAY, the second 2019 single, is a very nice song, with a nice piano line that already gives the song a certain something. For many reasons, this album hitting my devices has made me feel a little bit normal again.”
2. I Guess I Just Feel Like
” I GUESS I JUST FEEL LIKE is a slow song that is sung very emotionally here too. Slightly acoustic with two great guitar solos. As always, John Mayer has created some beautiful melodies and lyrics, which is his forté.”
