Something’s Happening Songs Ranked

Somethin’s Happening is the third studio album by English musician Peter Frampton, released in 1974. It reached #125 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Following the release of the 1973 album Frampton’s Camel, keyboard player Mick Gallagher chose to leave the group, and for the next album Peter Frampton played keyboards (except on ‘Sail Away’ and ‘Waterfall’ played by Nicky Hopkins) in addition to his more customary guitar duties. Frampton retained British bassist Rick Wills, and drummer John Siomos (credited as John Headley-Down) for Somethin’s Happening which was recorded, with Chris Kimsey engineering, at Olympic and Island Studios in London, and at Headley Grange in Hampshire, a former workhouse which had been previously used by Led Zeppelin for some of their notable recordings. Here are all of Something’s Happening songs ranked.

8. Sail Away

“Sail Away” is a timeless tune that will make you get up and dance, even if there’s no one but you, no matter where you are. Every time I play this song, I get an ear to ear smile that makes life a little easier to take.”

7. Waterfall

“What makes this album work are the rhythms and virtuoso guitar playing. I submit that Peter Frampton is the best guitarist in rock and his playing here soars and glides rather than burns and scorches.”

6. I Wanna Go to the Sun

“This album first came out in March 1974, this remastered version is fresh, vibrant, and very much a live production in the studio. An interesting mix of acoustic and electric styles.”

5. Golden Goose

“I always liked the dark, murky tone of the lp recording. Although this remaster benefits the best of all the remasters, giving it a little brighter sound, This melon collie vibe was/is still perfect for one of those dark, rainy, bluesy, nights when you just wanna be in your room/personal space, with a good stereo and hopefully a killer set of headphones on.”

4. Doobie Wah

“This one came at a special time in my life. Like Peter, I was feeling anxious, sad, and somewhat depressed, concerning my future. This one always made me smile inside. Soon, our hero would rise from cult status to bonafide Superstar.”

3. Underhand

“I doubt Peter’s singing and playing have ever sounded this original and outstanding for nowhere else in his career was he so focused and confident. He’d definitely found his niche by then and little did he know the immense success he would eventually taste a couple more years down the road would ultimately crush him, so this is music from before the storm when the eyes of the world wouldn’t have given him more than a glance…”

2. Baby (Somethin’s Happening)

“The music is fresh, vibrant, creative and very much alive and manages to deliver an interesting mix of electric and acoustic styles within its trio framework – Rick Wills on bass and John Headley-Down on drums.”

1. Magic Moon (Da Da Da Da Da!)

“Really worth a listen. Before Frampton went mainstream he had some very nice ideas and kept it as dry as a rock. My favorite Frampton songs of all time and the rhythm section here is probably the best he ever had, very tight and funky. Nice keyboard work too. Very musical and energetic effort.”
