Stealers Wheel Songs Ranked
Stealers Wheel was a Scottish folk-rock/rock band formed in 1972 in Paisley, Scotland, by former school friends Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty. Their best-known hit is “Stuck in the Middle with You”. The band broke up in 1975 and re-formed briefly in 2008. After being contacted by iTunes and K-tel in California, Tony Williams briefly re-formed Stealers Wheel in Blackpool in 2008 with Rod Coombes and Paul Pilnick, together with close friend Tony Mitchell. On 10 November 2008, they started filming a music video for a re-recording of “Stuck in the Middle” on the Fylde coast. They also began writing new songs although they had no plans to tour and disbanded again. Here are all of Stealers Wheel songs ranked.

10. Johnny’s Song (Stealers Wheel, 1972)
“A forceful theme “Johnny’s Song, with persistent bass lines and a precise and dry electric guitar. Stealers Wheel’s eponymous first album was a strong starting point for the promising singer/songwriting duo of the late Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan. Not to be missed.”
9. Next to Me (Stealers Wheel, 1972)
“Next To Me” is a folk catchy tune in a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s vocal style. This is really beautiful. This is a great album! Comparable to the best album of any 60s seventies group. Versatile and inventive.”
8. Gets So Lonely (Stealers Wheel, 1972)
“There is still room for an authentic marvel like “Gets So Lonely”, with an intoxicating keyboard and an exciting voice in its phrasing, all a direct punch to the coeur that is not equaled by an astifino”
7. I Get By (Stealers Wheel, 1972)
“With “I Get By”, Egan shows that he is also capable of composing a rock song with dignity, with some electric shrapnel. A wonderful compilation for us old folks and better than most artists today.”

6. In The Middle With You (Stuck in the Middle With You, 1978)
“There are several Stealers Wheel compilations available. All of them feature the band’s 3 hit singles, but this short one has the edge because of the relatively small amount of filler compared to longer compilations. “Stuck In The Middle With You” with its irritating chorus appears to be the only song people still remember today, which is sad because the other hits are much better songs.”
5. You Put Something Better Inside of Me (Stealers Wheel, 1972)
“Fantastic group, fantastic albums- there was a whole lot more to them and many more great songs besides “Stuck in the Middle With You.” It’s great to find their work on CD, and a shame so few people know about this music.”
4. Everything Will Turn Out Fine (Ferguslie Park, 1973)
“Should have been a bigger hit than it actually was, this was Stealers Wheel’s follow up to the massive “Stuck In The Middle With You”. It rocks slightly harder than its predecessor and cuts a similar groove to Medicine Head’s two UK hits also from 1973. The chart should have been big enough for all of them, in my view. The lyric wryly comments on alienation and apathy in modern society and is ably sung by a multi-tracked Gerry Rafferty.”

3. Star (Ferguslie Park, 1973)
“Proof that Stealers Wheel wasn’t just Gerry Rafferty plus one, as other half Joe Egan delivers a jarring little diatribe on the perils of fame which gave the group their only other chart hit after the success of “Stuck In The Middle With You”. One wonders just who the original inspiration for the song might have been, but anyway, it swings as it stings, employing kazoos of all things to pile on the sarcasm.”
2. Late Again (Stealers Wheel, 1972)
“A fantastic and catchy slow song with nice background and deep bass guitar. The harmonies recall the Beatles. It is a pity that this song never charted anywhere…”
1. Stuck in the Middle with You (Stealers Wheel, 1972)
“Fantastic song, fantastic production sound…just a fun romp. You can never go wrong when this comes on the radio. One of the best singles of the 1970’s.”
