Straight Shooter Songs Ranked

Straight Shooter is the second studio album by the English hard rock supergroup Bad Company. The album was released on April 2, 1975, a month after the release of the single “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad” and four months before the album’s second single “Feel Like Makin’ Love” (see 1975 in music). The album reached number 3 in the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. It was certified gold (500,000 units sold) by the Recording Industry Association of America a month after its release. The album was remastered and re-released in 1994. Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke stated on In the Studio (which devoted an episode to Straight Shooter) that the track “Shooting Star” (written by lead singer, Paul Rodgers) was lyrically inspired by the drug and alcohol-related deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. Here are all of Straight Shooter songs ranked.

8. Anna

“Anna’ is a little more low-key, and the keyboards give it a nice, mellow vibe, even if the lyrics are admittedly kind of lame. Anna is a simple love song.”

7. Call On Me

“The last song on the album, ‘Call on Me’, might be my favorite here. The piano is really quite beautiful and has a strangely unsettling quality to it, which is a new mood for Bad Company, instead of the usual ‘give me lovin, woman’ stuff. “

6. Weep No More

“‘Weep No More’ is a nice little piano shuffle with some strings added here and there (it actually works fairly well, even though that description made it sound awful).”

5. Deal With the Preacher

“Another song that was in the live set before being recorded was ‘Deal With The Preacher’. A belting rock song with a nice bridge it was an ideal concert opener and none of the power was lost on the studio version. It ensured both sides of the original vinyl issue opened with a bang.”

4. Wild Fire Woman

“The other straightforward rocker, ‘Wild Fire Woman’, starts out as a pretty standard song, but soon reveals an excellent chorus with some more wonderful vocals. ‘Wild Fire Woman’ was to become a live favourite in the early years with its driving rhythm ideally suited for US radio.”

3. Good Lovin’ Gone Bad

“‘Good Lovin’ Gone Bad’ opens the album, you feel like you’ve heard that riff several times before; if not on the first Bad Company album, then from bands before them. Also from the start, you can tell that this album brings more of an arena rock sound than last time.”

2. Feel Like Makin’ Love

“This album is the best from Paul Rodgers since Free. All the best perfomances from Paul Rodgers seems to be the balads. In “Feel Like Makin’ Love” he hits the balads together with his other “hard rock” style.”

1. Shooting Star

“‘Shooting Star’ though is probably the best cut on the album and remains an integral part of any Bad Company or Paul Rodgers show to this very day. Telling the story of a young man embarking on his rock n roll adventure, hitting the bigtime and subsequently dying of substance abuse it has wrongly been credited as a tribute to several fallen rockers including Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and more obviously Paul Kossoff.”
