The Captain and Me Songs Ranked

The Captain and Me is the third studio album by American rock band The Doobie Brothers. The album was released on March 2, 1973, by Warner Bros. Records. It features some of their most popular hits including “Long Train Runnin'”, “China Grove” and “Without You”. The album is certified 2× Platinum by the RIAA. It was voted number 835 in the third edition of Colin Larkin’s All-Time Top 1000 Albums (2000). There was pressure on the band to move quickly and to save time they began reworking old tunes. One of Tom Johnston’s songs, “Osborn”, had been an improvisational piece that the band played live. After laying down the track, according to producer Ted Templeman, “We still really didn’t have it, and I said, ‘Make it about a train, since you have this thing about ‘Miss Lucy down along the track.’ So he came up with “Long Train Runnin’.”

11. Ukiah

“Ukiah” not only has a neat shuffling rhythm and dusty vibe, it leads perfectly into the title track, which reimagines the CSN sound from a handful of stoned dudes who really want to be Hell’s Angels but aren’t quite grimy enough.”

10. Clear as the Driven Snow

“Clear As the Driven Snow” has some fantastic vocals that remind me of an Amish village down the road from me. I love where I live out in the country.”

9. Busted Down Around O’Connelly Corners

“Not only is it a terrific palette cleanser after the grinding awful ugliness “Evil Woman,” but it kicks off a segment of the album with real cohesion!”

8. Dark Eyed Cajun Woman

“I can take “Dark Eyed Cajun Woman” as an ok B.B. King tribute/ripoff (the strings, the guitar tone, guys, there was once upon a time a song called “The Thrill is Gone” that made something of a splash)”

7. Evil Woman

Evil Woman” sounds out of place with its echoed vocals recalling the psychedelic era, it is still an interesting tune. All told, The Captain and Me is one of the Doobies’ finest and everything here works.”

6. China Grove

“China Grove” is one of those Stonsey rockers where I forgot just how soulful it was. “China Grove” features a blistering intro guitar riff that relies on delay and lyrically tells the story of hot Lone Star State party action.”

5. South City Midnight Lady

“South City Midnight Lady” might be mistaken as just another soft rocker from the 70’s except for the fact the guitar playing is excellent and doesn’t deserve to be called typical or anything.”

4. Long Train Runnin’

“Long Train Runnin'” has a nice funky feel, great use of the bongos there, and the verse where it transitions into more of a rock rhythm is pretty effective.”

3. Without You

“Don’t get me wrong, “Without You” has some great riffs and a cool structure and is just all-around better than the similar and more familiar “Rockin’ Down the Highway.””

2. Natural Thing

“The vocals in this track show you exactly why the Doobie Brothers deserve to be remembered forever- no one else sounds like that. It’s completely unique. A certain talent for being distinct in terms of vocal delivery.”

1. The Captain and Me

The Captain and Me saw the Doobie Brothers making yet another change on this their third album, this time they would combine a touch of California folk mixed with some country rock, along with their full tilt trademarked American funk; thus making this album not only their most consistent, but most substantial to date.”
