Toulouse Street Songs Ranked

Toulouse Street is the second studio album by American rock band The Doobie Brothers. The album was released on July 1, 1972, by Warner Bros. Records. It was their first album with new bassist Tiran Porter and second drummer Michael Hossack to augment existing drummer John Hartman, so it meant that they now had their trademark twin-drummer sound. Toulouse Street is the name of a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The cover and inside centerfold photos were taken at a former brothel on Toulouse Street. Here are all of Toulouse Street’s songs ranked.

10. Listen to the Music

“A song I’ve believed for years is the very best the Doobie Brothers ever made- I think *that* highly of it. I LOVE the promising lyrics “Don’t you feel it growing, day by day, people gettin’ ready for the news, some are happy, some are sa-a-a-a-d, whoa gotta let the music play”. What’s interesting is that the melody itself sounds VERY sad.. .and happy.”

9. Don’t Start Me to Talkin’

“Don’t Start Me to Talkin” opens with a very Allman Brothers-like guitar riff before turning into a piano boogie/blues rocker. Great song! Oddly and ridiculously, amazon doesn’t want me to mention the name of the last song, but it’s a memorable country/blues song.”

8. Rockin’ Down the Highway

“Rockin’ Down the Highway” is like a shorter example of the same idea but equally effective because it’s basically a second helping of greatness.”

7. Jesus Is Just Alright

“Not sure why so many people have a problem with “Jesus Is Just Alright”. I think it’s even better than the Byrds version due to the way it slows down at the halfway point with the lyrics “Jesus, well he’s my friend, he took me by the hand he let me far from this land”. You gotta admit this part is REALLY good!”

6. Mamaloi

“Mamaloi” is an AWESOME song! Listen to how much of a brilliant beat it contains. The sincerity of the lead singers voice really enhances it too.”

5. White Sun

“White Sun” is based around VERY gentle and beautiful acoustic guitar work enhancing the vocal melody and lyrics “And I slip away down by the water, and I slip away down by the sea”. This is the kind of carefree joyfulness that captures the 70’s magic so well.”

4. Toulouse Street

“‘Toulouse Street’ is particularly loved by those who bought it on its release, because it was so different from the rest of the West Coast music — it sounded tighter than Jefferson Airplane or David Crosby, and you really didn’t need to take any drugs to appreicate it to the full.”

3. Disciple

“Disciple” is a fantastic rocker. At nearly 7 minutes in length, the tone, heaviness and vocal style doesn’t sound much different from what you’d find in “China Grove”. The guitar jam in the second half really makes you feel good too.”

2. Cotton Mouth

“Cotton Mouth” begins on a positive note with horns and conga drums, and a perfect groove/bluesy type of song. I wish the acoustic guitar jam lasted a couple minutes longer! That’s the coolest part of the song in my opinion.”

1. Snake Man

“Snake Man winds us down with a slower, but intriguing acoustic piece, and then, suddenly it’s all finished and you just feel a bit sad because you don’t really want it to stop!”
