12. Hazel Eyes (One Way Ticket to Hell… and Back, 2005)
“I think I remember the DJ saying it was based on an old Scottish fishermen’s folksong. Not surprising, considering the line “and the cruel nets had emptied the Northern Sea”. I believe it’s just about a man who falls in love with a woman he cares for during her time away from home. No matter what it’s about, I think it’s the Darkness’s most touching and beautiful songs to date.”
11. Holding My Own (Permission to Land, 2003)
“This song is about masturbation, but to me it’s always been an anthem for the sweet release of getting our of a long term relationship that you felt trapped under. I really connect to it with that meaning of a new found personal freedom.”
10. Is It Just Me? (One Way Ticket to Hell… and Back, 2005)
“I think the lyric is “Til death do us part” not “to take this too far”; then there’s “to honor and trust, in sickness and health” So I think maybe in addition the song being about to long distance loneliness, it’s about him thinking about marrying her? also, the music video involves a wedding with a twist.”
9. Get Your Hands Off My Woman (Permission to Land, 2003)
“Fantastic single with the most operatic use of the word ‘Motherfucker’ ever. Also contains ‘The Best of Me’ as a b-side, which in my mind is better than some of the stuff that made the final cut on the album. Plus the radio edit of ‘Get your hands off my Woman’ is quite funny, where he sings ‘coconut’ for ‘cunt’.”

8. Bald (One Way Ticket to Hell… and Back, 2005)
“My absolute favourite Darkness song. When you or I ask about something you are worried about and you say “my friend has this problem” whatever it is and its really yourself in denial and not someone else with a problem. What do you think?, and they answer and you go away and think about it. Sometimes it helps you to shake down whatever the problem is.”
7. Givin’ Up (Permission to Land, 2003)
“About heroin. Here’s the thing though, the name is givin up, which implies its about him giving up the drugs, but if you pay attention to the lyrics its about how much he loves them. The title is completely irrelevant to the song in every way. Anyway, great tune. About time there was a good modern band. I can only pray these guys get popular, real rock needs to make a come back.”
6. Black Shuck (Permission to Land, 2003)
“I knew it was some sort of legend about a ravenous beast, but as far as I knew the singer just made it up. I’m glad I came in here and got the skinny on a great song. Now that I know of its’ historical significance, it’s even more kick ass!”
5. Growing on Me (Permission to Land, 2003)
“Contrary to popular belief, and although filled with sexual innuendo, this song is in no way about pubic lice or any sexually transmitted disease. During an interview with the music television station VH1, Justin Hawkins stated: “People have said it’s about pubic lice, but that’s obviously wrong because pubic lice don’t grow on you, do they?” When questioned as to its true meaning Justin said: “A sweet lady woman that you will never fully fathom or understand, but you love her so much that after a while it doesn’t matter.””

4. One Way Ticket (One Way Ticket to Hell… and Back, 2005)
“With the driving guitar riffs and screeching vocals, The Darkness represents a throwback to the glory days of bands such as AC-DC and Van Halen. This is excellent music to drive fast to, or to work out to.”
3. Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) (Permission to Land, 2003)
“This song is basically about being away from your partner all year and the time you do have together at Christmas is really special and you make the most of it!”
2. Love is Only a Feeling (Permission to Land, 2003)
“My favourite song of existence. It quite simply interprets (to me), that love is a very beautiful yet risky emotion that one could feel at any time. Hawkins implies at various times in the song that when one is with another person, they believe in the idea that love is real, and though they aren’t sure if it is, it can make the person feel almost invincible, and capable of doing the impossible with that person beside them. Inevitably, love is just an emotion that is fleeting and can cause massive heartache whenever the feeling isn’t as euphoric as it once was, however, Hawkins suggests throughout the song that this feeling isn’t really one to give up on, considering it makes you feel so good about yourself.”
1. I Believe in a Thing Called Love (Hits 57, 2002)
“This is the cheesiest song ever, and yeah there’s no denying it. Technically it’s an awful song, but it’s just so catchy! It’s so bad it’s great and it puts a smile on my face every time I hear it. Throw this one on at a party and the air guitars come out.”
