The Sisters Of Mercy Albums Ranked

The Sisters of Mercy are an English rock band, formed in 1980 in Leeds. After achieving early underground fame there, the band had their commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output in protest against their record company WEA. Currently, the band are a touring outfit only. The Sisters of Mercy ceased recording activity in the early 1990s, when they went on strike against East West Records, whom they accused of incompetence and withholding royalties, and had pressured the group to release at least two more studio albums; instead, the label released the album Go Figure under the moniker SSV in 1997. Although the Sisters of Mercy were eventually released from their contract with East West, they have never been signed to another label nor released any new material, despite showcasing numerous new songs in their live sets. Here are all of The Sisters Of Mercy albums ranked.

6. The Reptile House E.P.

“This is an EP which defines and distills the very essence of the public perception of goth. The deep-throated murmuring miserablism of the vocals, backed by slovenly, portentous synth tones and an echoing drum machine. This is the sound of 80s Leeds, the sound of goth, the sound of a thousand self-harming black-clad misunderstood overweight teenage self-pity enthusiasts.”

5. A Slight Case Of Overbombing: Greatest Hits Vol.1

“A Slight case of over bombing compiles The Sisters of mercy’s best ‘longer’ songs over their 10 years in the music industry as well as adding a new track ‘Under the gun.’ Despite being a mostly solid song, surrounded by other such master pieces in pales by comparison. The song sounds like a duet with Pink and stands on this compilation as a bit of a soppy down fall right at the beginning; in fact, ‘Under the Gun’ could be called the worse track presented here.”

4. Some Girls Wander By Mistake

“A delightful collection of their independent-era singles along with the brilliant Reptile House EP. Of course, the problem with any such compilation is that the Sisters’ first couple of releases – The Damage Done and Body Electric – simply don’t measure up to the glories of the Temple of Love single or The Reptile House, or Even Alice/Anaconda.”

3. Vision Thing

“Pretty awesome album once again from this nice band. However this is still their weakest studio disc overall. Many great tracks in this album like for example the name track which opens the album, “Ribbons”, “When You Don’t See Me” and “More”. Others are nice too.”

2. First And Last And Always

“Good stuff, the faintly shimmering guitars are catchy and what keep you coming back to the dreariness. The vocalist is pretty bad though, you can hear him really putting pressure on his throat to create that unnatural deep voice and it’s kind of silly and melodramatic – but everything else about this shows the darkness is meant to be taken seriously, so that’s a problem.”

1. Floodland

“A long time favorite of mine. This album was basically the soundtrack to my senior year in high school. Gothic Rock rarely sounds this good, and it’s not nostalgia talking when I say that. Possibly the best vocals in the history of Gothic Rock are on display here.”
