The xx Songs Ranked

The xx is an English indie pop band from Wandsworth, London, formed in 2005. The band consists of Romy Madley Croft (guitar, vocals), Oliver Sim (bass guitar, vocals), Jamie Smith, also known as Jamie xx (beats, MPC, record production), and formerly Baria Qureshi (keyboard, guitar). They are known for their distinct and minimalist sound that blends indie pop, indie electronic, indie rock, dream pop, and electro-rock and the dual vocalist setup of both Croft and Sim. Their music employs soft, echoed guitar, prominent bass, light electronic beats, and ambient soundscape backgrounds. After a four-year lapse between releases, including Smith’s solo debut in 2015, In Colour, the band released their third album, I See You, on 13 January 2017, which debuted to critical acclaim and peaked at number one in the UK and number two on the Billboard 200. Here are all of The xx songs ranked.

10. On Hold (I See You, 2016)

“The production is unsurprisingly nice and lush, but the vocals have all of the passion and sincerity of an 80s romance movie duet.

9. Chained (Coexist, 2012)

“There’s the XX I remember. A dreary track that makes fantastic use of each singer’s natural chemistry. Lovely blends of simple bass and sparse flashes of beautiful melodies. This basically sticks to the formula the”

8. Say Something Loving (I See You, 2017)

“There is something wrong with this single. This is one of my favorite bands, even though it is going to take me some time to like their new album as much as I loved their previous material. I love the song and the genre. The performance is good as well. There seems to be something missing, though. Maybe it is Annie Lennox.”

7. Fiction (Coexist, 2012)

“This single is one of the best cuts from Coexist, which isn’t saying a whole lot since that album (and their discography,) was a wee bit disappointing. The song loses the xx’s great-on-paper boy-girl verses, leaving Oliver xx by his lonesome. He sings of a love he lost, but dreams of having his lover back, then realize he misses her after the end of the dream. This is a particularly great xx song because, unlike in most songs in their sophomore release, Fiction has a rhythm of sorts! The piano melody is also very pretty and the bass supplies a great addition, too. That’s pretty much the gist of it. This song’s a grower, and may require several listens.”

6. Basic Space (xx, 2009)

“This song is really stripped down, there is a basic one or two note chord used in there for the entire song. The basis of XX is two singers, one man, one women. They trade verses back and forth. They always seemed annoyed or something, however, it is usually pretty cool. The Arab girl is attractive”

5. Crystalised (xx, 2009)

“Who cares about the hype I’m digging this, like a cross between tricky and Martina with some early disco inferno guitars. very broody and sexy. “‘Crystalised’ is a night of strip poker, dare after dare to risk more with less. – Amy Granzin. Say no more; Amy Granzin’s ready for some strip poker.”

4. Angels (Coexist, 2012)

“Really lacks the darker mood that sold their debut album to me. Ultimately it’s a catchy little song that gets its job done. Hoping the rest of their album picks up where this slacks.”

3. Together (The Great Gatsby: Music from Baz Luhrmann’s Film, 2013)

“Such a beautiful song from The Great Gatsby soundtrack. I’m pretty sure they wrote it based on the interpretation of a scene working alongside Baz Luhrmann and Anton Monsted. It fits the narrative perfectly with such a mysterious, somber tone that fits the tragic love story. Can’t help but become obsessed with this tune.”

2. Islands (xx, 2009)

“I think this song is about finding ‘the one’ too early in life. Your happy to have your true love, and everything is great, but then you realize that your done.. no more looking or new experiences with other lovers. And eventually, that could lead to self-sabotage “see What I’ve done, the bridge is on fire” it’s too much smooth sailing too fast, meeting the right one too early in life.. its something a lot of people can probably relate to, I love it, it is beautifully written, and the video is miraculous! But it’s sad and true how this can turn out in a broken hearts and confusion.”

1. Do You Mind? (xx, 2009)

“This song is about a deep connection that can be compared to love at first sight with loves first touch. I absolutely love it. It seems like this song is about a one night stand kind of situation and wanting it to become something more afterwards.”
