Thunder and Lightning Songs Ranked

Thunder and Lightning is the twelfth and final studio album by Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy, released in 1983. Guitarist John Sykes was hired to replace Snowy White after 1981’s Renegade, and Sykes helped to provide a heavier sound and guitar tone than Thin Lizzy had used on previous albums. However, the bulk of the songwriting (except for “Cold Sweat”) was completed before he joined the band. Keyboard player Darren Wharton also offered a stronger musical influence to Thin Lizzy’s final studio album, co-writing many of the tracks including “Some Day She Is Going to Hit Back”, and the final single “The Sun Goes Down”. A farewell tour followed the album’s release, followed by the live album Life. The group’s co-founder, frontman and bass player Phil Lynott died in 1986. Here are all of Thunder and Lightning songs ranked.

9. Bad Habits

“When John Sykes joined Thin Lizzy, the young guitarist immediatley kicked new life into the ol’ warhorse. Lizzy pumped out an epic hard rock recording with the release of _Thunder and Lightning_ in 1983. The LP marked the end of a legendary band… but they went out with all guns blazing.”

8. Someday She Is Going to Hit Back

“Thin Lizzy’s _Thunder and Lightning_ is essentially the group’s swan song. When John Sykes joined Thin Lizzy, the young guitarist immediatley kicked new life into the ol’ warhorse. Specifically, the addition of Sykes rejuvinated Scott Gorham.”

7. Baby Please Don’t Go

“The storming _Thunder and Lightning_ is packed with an assortment of aggressive, rock solid tracks, that will forever withstand the test of time. Produced by Chris Tsangarides, the disc rages from start to close, with Lynott assuming an authoritative stance.”

6. Heart Attack

“Thunder and Lightning is a surprisingly very good album, which turned out to be the last studio album by Thin Lizzy. John Sykes` guitar work gave Thin Lizzy some new energy and a more updated sound at the time. It really complements Phil Lynott`s vocals and meshed well with Scott Gorham`s always excellent guitar work.”

5. This Is the One

” The only thing that keeps Thunder and Lightning from ranking with Lizzy`s classic albums is the overuse of the synthesizer at times, which impedes some of the song. The album would`ve been better off if it at least cut down on it`s use or at least had more keyboards much like Mr. Crowley and instead focused more on the strong guitar playing, which while pretty good, lacked the traditional harmony leads for the most part.”

4. The Holy War

“The addition of John Sykes (guitar) did wonders for this LP. It infused additional songwriting skills and importantly – passion. Most people can agree Phil was worn out by this time due to drugs and pressures of life in a rock & roll band. “

3. The Sun Goes Down

“Darren Wharton on keyboards is the highlight of the new and final sound of Thin Lizzy. “The Sun Goes Down” is a gem and his presence on the album is very positive. The band overall sounds tired, even though it’s the most “metal” the band ever got.”

2. Thunder and Lightning

“This album not only is probably Thin Lizzy’s third or fourth best but probably top twenty five all time! The writing is incredible and playing excellent if there is any faults to this album maybe production and vocals!Phil was a little rough not his usually well rounded self! “

1. Cold Sweat

“John Sykes certainly brought his mark to Lizzy but except for “Cold Sweat”, his guitar work doesn’t do much for me. Darren Wharton on keyboards is the highlight of the new and final sound of Thin Lizzy.”
