Tool Songs Ranked

Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990, the group’s line-up includes drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Justin Chancellor has been the band’s bassist since 1995, replacing their original bassist Paul D’Amour. Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries. Due to Tool’s incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today’s music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band’s insistence on privacy. Here is Tool’s songs ranked worst to best.

20. Ticks & Leeches (Lateralus, 2001)

“This is what you wanted… this is what you had in mind. One of the greatest drum parts of all-time caps off this magnificent song by one of metal’s most original, powerful, and technical groups. Really, everything about this song is perfect, but as a drummer, I have to give extra props to Carrey on this track. And not Jim Carrey. Danny Carrey, the drummer. Not the comedian. And if you needed that reminder, please don’t vote. You obviously don’t know Tool well enough.”

19. H (Ænima, 1996)

“To me, on Aenima, they had the best blend, and even though they had more complex songwriting than on the first album, they didn’t go on for too long, managed to make songs more concrete and ”to the point”, nowadays, even though I still really love them, they tend to ramble on for too long.”

18. Pushit (Ænima, 1996)

“This is my favorite song by tool, it is one of those songs that you start listening to once you start getting sick of the album and start experimenting with the longer songs that take a little discipline to sit threw, but once you do you realize how amazing this song is and how epic the climax is. Maynard does some of his best vocals at the end of this song. Because this song is a little less popular then most of their songs I think it is missed a lot, but you just have to give it a try. One of tools great compositions.”

17. Third Eye (Ænima, 1996)

“Great song people easily overlook it could have a variety of meanings doesn’t matter because people can relate to this song however they want. For me it opened up the door for me to look into meditation as a way to calm my mind and try to experience something different and has worked real well for me so far.”

16. Rosetta Stoned (10,000 Days, 2006)

“Easily the best and my favorite TOOL song. The rapid vocal lines along with chugging and changing guitar lines and a constantly changing bass line to go along with it makes this a perfect definition of a TOOL song. The descending tone of the guitar makes it even better.”

15. The Grudge (Lateralus, 2001)

” If you really want to get a feeling of what Tool is and how good they can be you have to listen to this song. In my mind this is the perfect song to start their best album! One of the few albums I could listen to on repeat over and over.”

14. Prison Sex (Undertow, 1993)

“This song shows both their artistic ability and the fact that they can rock pretty damn hard. One of my favorites as far as Maynard’s voice goes, plus that riff is just amazing.”

13. Jambi (10,000 Days, 2006)

“Jambi is just so powerful. Almost no other song in the world can compare to it. Every part of it is great. It reminds me of an orchestral piece. It starts out heavy and loud, then gets softer, then softer still and grows in intensity until the end where it is just orgasmic.”

12. Right in Two (10,000 Days, 2006)

“This is the best tool song alongside Lateralus. The build up is fantastic with with the smooth melody accompanied with Maynards devastating and honest poetry of the nature of mankind. Then the massive final where Adam’s, Justin’s and Danny’s unique common awareness comes to live. Simply amazing!”

11. Eulogy (Ænima, 1996)

“This song just switches me off and reminds me when I had no hope of living, it scream inside me reminding me that am not the only one with problems, lines like “we wish you well, you told us that you weren’t afraid to die”I can remember still remember those days and this song just takes me to exact time of my hollow…”

10. Stinkfist (Ænima, 1996)

“Starts out with a very basic beat and then sucks you in to this very unique, and unequaled, Tool album. I love Stinkfist, not for it’s undertones of desensitization of music/society or the subtle introduction of voice mixing, I love the entire composition and the ride…damn it’s the whole transition from angst-depression Tool to something more.”

9. 10,000 Days (Wings, Pt 2) (10,000 Days, 2006)

“One of the most powerful and emotionally evoking song I have ever heard. Such a brilliant peice of art with fantastic musicianship. How it all expands on one of the greatest bass lines from the band. Including some of Maynards most beautiful melodies that transides in to a powerful and agitating break down.”

8. Aenima (Ænima, 1996)

“I love Aenima! This song kicks serious butt! I love the drums and everything else in this song! A bunch of redneck rockers choose Slipknot over Tool… Tool is better than mainstream stuff!”

7. The Pot (10,000 Days, 2006)

“This song defines Tool as a band. If your angry this is a great song because the lyrics and vocals are so good and full of anger. James Maynard Keenan’s vocal range is best displayed in this song. I’m surprised to see that Lateralus, Schism, and Vicarious are top three (they’re still all great songs), but this song is just as good if not better than all of those”

6. Sober (Undertow, 1993)

“Maynard’s explosive vocals in this song give me the chills every time. The best song on Undertow by far although Prison Sex deserves recognition as well”

5. Forty Six & 2 (Ænima, 1996)

“I LOVE this song so much. It has great riffs, amazing lyrics, even decent drumming. What more could you want from a rock song? Maynard’s vocals are amazing here. Hands down one of Tool’s best songs ever.”

4. Parabola (Lateralus, 2001)

“It is one of those songs that change your perception. Every time I hear it, Parabola restates why it is so important to keep moving forward, to realize the illusions of life, to live life to its full potential and to feel the rhythm and beauty all around.”

3. Vicarious (10,000 Days, 2006)

“Vicarious may deserve a spot in the top 10, but number one? It’s a great song, but its not even the most brilliantly crafted song on the 10,000 Days album. 10,000 Days and Right in Two are tied for that distinction in my mind.”

2. Schism (Lateralus, 2001)

“This was my introduction to Tool, I loved the song then and it made me listen to more and now Tool is my favourite band. I still listen to this song on a regular basis”

1. Lateralus (Lateralus, 2001)

“The song is so well structured, so intricate with every detail of the song, from the lyrical structures, to the time signatures, to the instrumentation, everything. The irony within Lateralus, however, lies in the words themselves, urging the listener to “not get caught up in the small details of life, to embrace the random”.
