Toxicity is the second studio album by Armenian-American heavy metal band System of a Down, released on September 4, 2001, through American Recordings and Columbia Records. Expanding on their 1998 eponymous debut, it incorporated more melody, harmonies, and singing than the band’s aforementioned album. Categorized primarily as alternative metal and nu metal, Toxicity features elements of multiple genres including folk, progressive rock, jazz, Armenian music, and Greek music, including prominent use of instruments such as the sitar, banjo, keyboards, and piano. It contains a wide array of political and non-political themes, such as mass incarceration, the CIA, the environment, police brutality, drug addiction, scientific reductionism, and groupies. Toxicity was recorded at Cello Studios in Hollywood, California. Over 30 songs were recorded, but the band narrowed the number of songs on the album to 14. The album peaked at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart, sold 220,000 copies in its first week of release, was certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in November 2002, and has sold at least 2,700,000 copies in the United States. “A nice intro, and then there comes them yelling. This song is similair to jet pilot in that its repetive and fairly heavy, but i think this song is better. This song makes me picture a riot!!!”

13. Jet Pilot

“The intro starts out with them just yelling. This is propbably one of the heaviest songs on the album, and one of the worst. Its just to repetitive on the lyrics. Nothing special, move on”

12. Bounce

“Similair to X, seeming it goes for basically the same time, though this song is way less political. This is a fairly heavy song which starts off with Serj(singer) yelling bounce, up, down, pogo, bounce. I think this song is about an orgy or somethin.”

11. Shimmy

“A very strange wacky song. Even for system of a down its strange. The song starts with a guitar intro and then ends with serj speaking exstremely fast. Very strange song with a great bridge in the middle with some banjo in the back ground or some wierd instrument. All in all strange song, worth a listen.”

10. Science

“This song starts out with an excellent guitar intro and then serj comes out and speaks very fast. This song has the best guitar riffs in the whole album and i love the bridge in the middle when arto takes over and you hear mid eastern music. Really cool song, could be a bit less repetitive but that won’t stop it from being a ten over ten.”

9. Deer Dance

“The topic of this song is similair to prison song, any way starts out with a soft intro and soft talking, and then once it comes to the chorus you hear them yelling.”

8. Needles

“Starts out very heavy after the intro, and has a great bridge in the middle where daron malakian(guitarist) pops out and says “im sitting in my room with a needle in my hand”. All in all great song.”

7. Psycho

“Another strange song though not as strange as shimmy. This is propbably one of the bounciest songs i have ever heard. I think this song is talking about cocaine groupies. All in all good song.”

6. Forest

“The long lasting song for system of a down at about 4 minutes. Any way this is a medium pace song for system of a down, with good guitar riffs after the intro. I think this an anti religion song. This song really grew on me”

5. ATWA

“A very slow song for system of a down. Starts off with sad kinda music and then in the chorus without warning you serj pops out and says in his fast talk you don’t care about how i feel. All in all great song a little overated by their fans but not bad”

“A great political song aiming at the prison systems in america. A great song to start the album with and this is one of the most fast paced song on the album.”

3. Aerials

“Similair to toxicity though not as good as toxicity. This song starts with slow creepy music and then as the intro is about to finish it gets more quicker and less creepier. Im not sure if this is true but i think this song is talking about greed because in a sentence it says “life is a waterfall we drink from a river and then we go around and build up our walls” which i think represents greed. All in all good song.”

“Yes this is a song talking about city life and its poison. This song starts out with sad music played on the guitar, and the intro then ends with a kinda bang an then serj tankian comes out and sings softly and sadly and he then gets more vicious as he gets closer to the chorus. Excellent song i can see why this was their seconde single, and yes this too is one of their crowd pleasers.”

1. Chop Suey!

“Nice intro which finishes with serj tankian(singer) yelling a word , then pausing and then talking very very fast. This song is still their crowd pleasers at concerts and is a well known clasic rock song.”
