Traveling Wilburys Albums Ranked

The Traveling Wilburys (sometimes shortened to the Wilburys) was an English–American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. Originating from an idea discussed by Harrison and Lynne during the sessions for Harrison’s 1987 album Cloud Nine, the band formed in April 1988 after the five members united to record a bonus track for Harrison’s next European single. When this collaboration, “Handle with Care”, was deemed too good for such a limited release, the group agreed to record a full album, titled Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. Following Orbison’s death in December 1988, the band released a second album, which they titled Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, in 1990.
The project’s work received much anticipation given the diverse nature of the singer-songwriters. The band members adopted tongue-in-cheek pseudonyms as half-brothers from a fictional Wilbury family of traveling musicians. Vol. 1 was a critical and commercial success, helping to revitalize Dylan’s and Petty’s respective careers. In 1990, the album won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. Here are all of The Traveling Wilburys’ albums ranked.

3. The Traveling Wilburys Collection (2007)

“WOW!!! This super group spans the entire range of Rock & Roll from its birth with Roy Orbison’s records on Sun label to Tom Petty who was at this time pumping out very successful contemporary music! Then factor in Rock & Roll legends like George Harrison & Bob Dylan, & we can’t dismiss the super talent of Jeff Lynne & everything he brings to the table… WOW!!! One thing that really makes me happy about George Harrison putting together this group of Genius talent is that Roy Orbison a very humble but hugely talented man was able to be a member of this super group before he passed away! Not only did Roy get to do what he loved he learned that these super star had idolized him & was a huge influence on their careers!!! Unfortunately after the death of ” The Traveling Wilburys ” creator George Harrison it is almost a certainty that no more music will be made, this makes this product quite possibly the definitive collection. “

2. The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 3 (1990)

“The talent on this album is amazing. Every song is great and I can’t stop listening to it. Makes me feel like a kid after my parents got me my first Beatles album. Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison are amazing together and each song has a sound of its own. Give this one serious consideration. If you are a fan of any of the artists, you will love it. If you are a fan of all four, like me, you will probably flip. ENJOY!!!”

1. The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1 (1988)

“Individually, the Wilbury’s are a talent to be reckoned with. This album lets everyone get on at the front and has all the musicianship you would rightly expect. I enjoyed it for the commercialism and freshness it brought to the scene when it was released. This replaces my worn out copy and takes it’s place in the cabinet of “most enjoyed”. I was one of the naysayers – i didn’t like Bob Dylan, I wasn’t keen on Harrison, ELO weren’t my bag, Petty was good but Orbison was who my Mum listened too. This album peaked my interest and made me explore my “dislikes” to discover that actually, I liked – all of them. Individually and together as here. A classic album by 5 legends.”
