True Stories Songs Ranked

True Stories is the seventh studio album by American rock band Talking Heads. It was released on September 15, 1986, by Sire Records, preceding lead singer David Byrne’s film of the same name. In 2006, the album was re-released and remastered by Warner Music Group on their Warner Bros./Sire Records/Rhino Records labels in DualDisc format, with three bonus tracks on the CD side (an extended mix of “Wild Wild Life”, “Papa Legba” with vocal by Pops Staples, and “Radio Head” with vocals by Tito Larriva). The DVD-Audio side includes both stereo and 5.1 surround high resolution (96 kHz/24bit) mixes, as well as a Dolby Digital version and the videos of “Wild Wild Life” and “Love for Sale”. In Europe, it was released as a CD+DVDA two disc set rather than a single DualDisc. The reissue was produced by Andy Zax with Talking Heads. Here are all of True Stories songs ranked.

9. Love for Sale

“Love For Sale” – is a straight-up, hooky rock song and a swipe at the sexploitation typically seen in ads. The video is one of the most clever and entertaining in their catalog. Almost a pop song with a fairly heavy rift. Almost a rock and roll song except infused with TH creative strangeness.”

8. Hey Now

“Relaxed almost I’m in the Caribbean on holiday mood. Very uplifting sunshine guitars and some lovely use of very subtle percussion. Sort of trance-like hypnotic sound.”

7. Wild Wild Life

“I wonder how many people knew David was wearing fur pajamas and riding a hot potato! – catchy some tremendous subtle guitar work. Unfortunately overplayed on the radio and as others have said there are other better (IMO) gems on this album.”

6. Dream Operator

“David Byrne’s deep lyrics meander with a really innovative use of almost trance like rock vibe. Again to appreciate this song you need to give it your full attention – this is not background elevator music. Tina’s bass as ever fantastic here she’s such a great bass guitarist.”

5. City of Dreams

“Absolute classic “Heads” song – any song that has the line “dinosaurs did a dance” is just thought provoking! (LOL) The musicianship on this track is wonderful especially the magnificent contribution of Tom Morrell’s beautiful pedal steel guitar – is just music for the heart. Chris Franz drums so emotionally dramatic – people really need to listen to this one without distraction. One of the most moving talking heads tracks ever.”

4. People Like Us

“People Like Us” is less country/western than a dance-rock type tune with a twangy guitar part and one of my favorites here. The Heads psychedelic take on country music – very catchy nice use of fiddle”

3. Radio Head

“The song that gave Radiohead their name is a winner, full of energy and Zydeco flavor. “Radio Head” have a heavy tex mex rhythmic flavor to both of them and have qualities that are almost singalong in quality along with strong hooks.”

2. Papa Legba

” Pops Stables version (DVD-A) – just marvelous voice and beautiful musicianship. Really well balanced use of voice and instrumentation – demands one’s full attention to appreciate the subtleties of this tremendous song. Talking Heads really hit the ball out the park here.”

1. Puzzlin’ Evidence

“Puzzling Evidence is just fantastic Jerry Harrison’s “trance-church” (is that a new genre the Heads invented?) keyboards are just amazing – along with the beautiful guitar work along with sublime lyrics- the downside of destroying Native American culture with white man’s values. The use of a choir for the chorus is just superb and almost subversive.”
