Turn Back Songs Ranked

Turn Back is the third studio album by the American rock group Toto released in 1981. Although it yielded the band’s first top-ten hit in Japan and steady sales in that country, the album was a commercial disappointment elsewhere, failing to produce any charting singles and selling approximately 900,000 copies worldwide. Turn Back was recorded with Geoff Workman, who worked as the engineer for Queen, as well as producer and engineer for the Cars, Journey, and Foreigner. The band’s intention behind the album was to become an “arena rock band” and emphasize a heavier rock sound. Toto guitarist and vocalist Steve Lukather has credited Workman for providing the album a “new and very different sound” consisting of virtually no mid-range. Here are all of Turn Back songs ranked.

8. A Million Miles Away

“Toto’s one of those bands that almost no matter what mood you’re in, they’ll sound good to you. You can be real hyped up and need some rockin’ music, and they’ll deliver. You might be feeling down and sad and need someone to comiserate with: they’re right there with you, putting into words your very emotions.”

7. If It’s the Last Night

If It’s the Last Night” is a Steve Lukather sung acoustic ballad with a slight REO Speedwagon vibe to it. This is also the album’s powerful closing track.”

5. Turn Back

“Turn Back” does not disappoint. It’s got that typical Toto touch (how’s that for alliteration?)that you can’t resist. Catchy tunes, wailing solos, and good old fashioned harmony: it’s all there, like every original Toto album.”

4. English Eyes

“English Eyes features a near constant sludge riff and perhaps the catchiest chorus on the album. It also winds down gently into an ethereal mid-section before blasting back for a second round.”

3. I Think I Could Stand You Forever

“I Think I Could Stand You Forever” has a harder edge to it and once again comes across with musical references to Queen and Journey. I Think I Could Stand You Forever” is one of my favorite songs and I am staunch in my belief that it’s Steve Lukather’s top solo.”

2. Gift With a Golden Gun

“The opener is the rock song “Gift With A Golden Gun”, which is one of the best songs on the album. Kimball’s vocals sound a bit like Peter Cetera and the whole song’s a bit like “Chicago”.

1. Goodbye Elenore

“This is a song about what you could call bad love. People knows that she can decieve, but someone still gets caught up by her. No surprise there. Now, to all you drummers out there, listen GOOD to the footwork and beat that Jeffrey uses, it’s one of a kind and sounds SO cool! It really adds to the sound!”
