TVXQ! Albums Ranked

TVXQ (stylized as TVXQ!), an initialism for Tong Vfang Xien Qi (Chinese: 東方神起), is a South Korean male pop duo consisting of U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin. They are known as Tohoshinki (東方神起, Tōhōshinki) in Japanese releases, and are sometimes referred to as DBSK, an abbreviation of their Korean name Dong Bang Shin Ki (Korean: 동방신기). Their name roughly translates to “Rising Gods of the East”. Selling over 10 million physical records in the first 10 years of their career, TVXQ has become one of Asia’s most successful music acts of their generation. They are often referred to as “Asia’s Stars” and the “Kings of K-pop” for their immense success and contributions to the Hallyu. According to the Oricon, TVXQ has the number-one singles and albums for a foreign artist in Japan and is also Japan’s best-selling foreign artist in CD singles of all time. Their Time Tour, one of the highest-grossing concert tours of 2013, broke attendance records for foreign singers in Japan until 2017 when TVXQ broke that same record with their Begin Again Tour. TVXQ are the first non-Japanese Asian artists to headline a nationwide five-Dome tour and the first foreign artists to headline the Nissan Stadium. Billboard has described the group as “K-pop royalty”. 10. New Chapter #1: The Chance of Love

“This album is very interesting. Although the lead singles chosen are the weakest on the album in my opinion. It is possible to see different stages of TVXQ’s career at the launch, the jazz that had been with the group for some time, the powerful ballads – which were the high point of the first albums, well placed solos of the 2, the good old R&B, etc. Unlike what they tried to do at the beginning of the decade, this album is very lean, so the fillers go unnoticed.”

9. Tomorrow

“After a long time without a new album in Japanese, avex chose to bring a safer sound to TVXQ. It’s not an album with anything very new, but it works very well for what it set out to do. I like the re-records as it’s not easy to replace 3 voices the way they did. The more upbeat songs aren’t as try-hard as they were at the start of the decade. The Chance of Love version is unnecessary.”

8. With

“Avex invested more in the production of With than in the previous one. It’s a monotonous album, mostly generic and doesn’t bring anything new to the group’s extensive catalogue. Easily a 5 track EP would solve the problem. Time Works Wonders brings a little cheer to work, but it’s not enough to be good.”

7. Time

“Maybe a mini-album would work better. Time has 3 very strong songs, which could stand out even more if the fillers followed in quality. I consider the group’s worst Japanese release.”

6. TONE

“This album already sounds more natural than the Korean one. There was a lot of interesting work in the production of the ballads, perhaps because it’s something that the Japanese audience values more. It’s not the best, nor the most inspired of them, but it doesn’t fall short of what the group used to release before.”

5. Mirotic

“This album was a great success for the group that was already starting to become commonplace. The lead single was, until then, something unprecedented in TVXQ’s career, I consider it one of the best pop songs of the decade. The ballads don’t sound as automatic as the previous ones and the album has big hits. They hit the nail on the head by investing more in this R&B.”

4. Heart, Mind and Soul

“Perhaps the “excess” of ballads detracts from the experience for some. It’s not my case, because I love this kind of music… This Japanese debut hits the nail on the head by focusing on the best of the 5, which are ballads with very powerful vocals. It’s amazing how well the 5 voices always fit together, it was practically impossible to go wrong. From this work come the best TVXQ ballads to date.”

3. XV

“Almost 1 hour into the album made me a little apprehensive at first. This is easily TVXQ’s best Japanese album since the wonderful “The Secret Code”. The more upbeat songs, distributed more in the first half of the album, are really good. They run away from that more jazzy influence that Korean releases insist on bringing and from the more try-hard songs of the beginning of the decade. The ballads aren’t the best, but I wouldn’t classify them as fillers.”

2. Tense

“This is one of TVXQ’s best works. After a string of uninspired and generic releases, they finally delivered a GOOD (really) job. I confess that the tracks with the most jazz influence are not my favorites, but they bring something new to the group’s vast discography. The ballads are excellent.”

1. New Chapter #2: The Truth Of Love

“The best thing about this release is the duration. What could easily have become a dull full album, full of fillers and generic songs, is a mini with very refreshing moments (“City Lights” and “Jelly Love”) and interesting ballads (Beautiful Stranger). Truth and Sooner Than Later end up left over.”
