Against Me! Songs Ranked

Against Me! is an American punk rock band formed in 1997 in Gainesville, Florida, by singer and guitarist Laura Jane Grace. Since 2001, the band’s lineup has also included guitarist James Bowman. After releasing three studio albums through independent record labels, Against Me! moved to Sire Records for 2007’s New Wave, which reached no. 57 on the Billboard 200. In 2011, the band launched their own record label, Total Treble, through which to release future albums. In 2012, Grace publicly came out as a transgender woman. After a long period of line-up changes and uncertainty surrounding the band’s future, their sixth studio album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, was released independently in January 2014 to critical and commercial acclaim. The band’s seventh full-length, Shape Shift with Me, was released on September 16, 2016. Here are all of Against Me! songs ranked.

10. Unconditional Love (Transgender Dysphoria Blues, 2014)

“‘Unconditional Love’ is a beautiful almost-pop song about LJG’s depression and despair and even suicidal ideation, and how that has been affected by her close relationships, including with her then-wife.”

9. Baby, I’m an Anarchist! (Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose, 2002)

“So yeah, from the fun of Those Anarcho Punks… to the change in tempo offered by Baby, I’m an Anarchist!, the second half is a blast. It’s what all folk-punk should be and is a perfect example of how Against Me! are what people tend to think about when you say “folk-punk”. How could you ever avoid singing your heart out to some of these songs? I sure can’t!”

8. True Trans Soul Rebel (Transgender Dysphoria Blues, 2014)

“The verses here seem to pour out of Laura’s mouth, her thoughts on the trans experience spilling forth after having been bottled up for years. She seemingly borrowing from the John Darnielle lyrical style on a song like True Trans Soul Rebel to champion the downtrodden (“Does god bless your transsexual heart?/True trans soul rebel”), and in general is still experimenting here just as much as she has on past albums.”

7. The Ocean (New Wave, 2007)

“Perhaps the most striking facet of Against Me! is vocalist and songwriter Tom Gabel who had been open about his struggles with gender dysphoria and which are touched upon in “The Ocean””

6. Fuckmylife666 (Transgender Dysphoria Blues, 2014)

“The formula here is pretty simple. The guitars have to sound really raw and the bridge pickup should be the only one selected. The drumming work has to be diverse but never odd.”

5. Pints Of Guinness Make You Strong (Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose, 2002)

“‘Pints Of Guinness Make You Strong’ is fantastic and easily the best of the album, which is sad as it is basically down hill on your bike from here with a few speed bumps. “

4. I Was A Teenage Anarchist (White Crosses, 2010)

“No further proof is needed outside of the first single “I Was a Teenage Anarchist”. In some ways, this is the song the band has been building towards for at least three albums. It’s an incredibly ballsy song for the band to put out as a single, but especially so when one takes the song’s content into consideration. I mean, this is a song that dissociates the band from a scene that not only spawned them, but gave them such a tight bond with their original audience – Not many people could get away with that, and I’m not sure the band will get away with it, even though it’s a great song.”

3. Trash Unreal (New Wave, 2007)

“”Trash Unreal” is probably the biggest highlight of the album. Despite having a certain style different from what the band has always shown, it appears to be well accepted by everyone. The same can be considered for “Up the Cuts” and even the more traditional “Americans Abroad” that won its studio version here.”

2. Black Me Out (Transgender Dysphoria Blues, 2014)

“‘Black Me Out’ is a great ending track, not so much explicitly about trans issues but a personal, angry screed about getting rid of the baggage of people who make you feel shitty. Damn… fake friends, u gotta cut them out bae. It’s a really good way to close the album, leaving you wanting more.”

1. Transgender Dysphoria Blues (Transgender Dysphoria Blues, 2014)

“Transgender Dysphoria Blues is not only one of the most authentic feeling pop punk albums I’ve ever heard, it’s one of the most authentic albums in modern rock music. The record feels like true pain, anxiety, anger, and sociopolitical unrest put through the medium of some incredibly well-written and catchy pop punk songs that contain some of the best and most heartfelt lyrics I’ve heard in a long time.”
