Agent Provocateur Songs Ranked

Agent Provocateur is the fifth studio album by the British-American rock band Foreigner, released on December 7, 1984. The album was the band’s first and only number one album in the United Kingdom, and it reached the top 5 in the United States. Although album sales were lower than their previous work in the U.S., it contains the band’s biggest hit single, “I Want to Know What Love Is”, which is their only #1 single in the UK and the U.S., staying at the top spot for three and two weeks respectively. The follow-up single, “That Was Yesterday”, also proved to be a sizeable hit, peaking at #12 in the U.S. The album was certified Platinum in the UK by the BPI, and triple Platinum in the U.S. by the RIAA. Here are all of Agent Provocateur songs ranked.

10. Two Different Worlds

“Not Foreigner’s strongest album, but definitely one of their most solid and consistent albums. Highly recommended, especially if you love ’80s analog synths and want to hear Gramm’s excellent, outstanding voice.”

9. Stranger in My Own House

“Foreigner liked to consider themselves as a hard-rock group, but while they could certainly rock with the best, I quickly realized why their biggest hits were all ballads. Lou Gramm is a fine ballad singer but he struggles with the up-tempo songs.”

8. A Love in Vain

“I’ve enjoyed Foreigner’s music for many years, though I am not as big a Foreigner fan as many others that have reviewed this album. Comparing this album to other Foreigner albums, I think it’s one of their better albums.”

7. She’s Too Tough

“That song to me should have been another big Foreigner hit. The album then closes with the average (for Foreigner) but still enjoyable rocker “She’s Too Tough”. I guess the main problem people have with this album is that it goes a little bit away from the over-the-top backing vocals and amount of hard rock that is present on the first four albums.”

6. Down on Love

“Sure, Lou and Mick weren’t even speaking to each other when they made this album, but the results were certainly inspiring. At times, synths undermine some of the rawness that would have been preferred, but some of Foreigner’s best songs are here.”

5. Reaction to Action

“Foreigner liked to consider themselves as a hard-rock group, but while they could certainly rock with the best, I quickly realized why their biggest hits were all ballads. Lou Gramm is a fine ballad singer but he struggles with the up-tempo songs. Fans of hard-rock music tend to be more interested in the music rather than the singing, and some of them despise ballads.”

4. Growing Up the Hard Way

“Growing Up The Hard Way” is a decent anthem although one of the less notable tracks on the album. This album contains the best rock/pop ballad ever. I bet you can’t guess which one it is? The rest of the album is pretty good.”

3. Tooth and Nail

“The rough and tough “Tooth and Nail” appropriately kicks things off, with Lou Gramm’s intense vocals immediately letting us know that he means business.”

2. That Was Yesterday

“The beautiful, heart-rending anthem, “That Was Yesterday”–a number 12 hit that nonetheless had no staying power on radio. Mick Jones still had a knack for a hook as evidenced with the memorable keyboard lines on “That Was Yesterday”.

1. I Want to Know What Love Is

“Agent Provocateur was a change from the gritty hard rock foreigner had been known for.Agent is filled with synthesizers and great Mick Jones lyrics.Of course I want to know what love is is the biggest hit and most well known of the album.”
