Buddy Wynkoop confront capitalist decay on jagged new single ‘Nouveau Riche’
Portland art-punk collective Buddy Wynkoop crash into 2026 with ‘Nouveau Riche’, a frantic and emotionally charged first taste of their upcoming EP arriving this July.
Blending shout-sung urgency, fractured guitar work and spiralling spoken-word intensity, the six-piece continue transforming modern anxiety into something chaotic, cathartic and strangely exhilarating. ‘Nouveau Riche’ feels restless by design, constantly shifting between tension and release while mirroring the instability at the centre of its themes.
Lyrically, the track draws inspiration from the Japanese concept of mono no aware, the bittersweet awareness that beauty gains meaning through impermanence. But rather than simply celebrating fleeting moments, Buddy Wynkoop place that idea in direct conflict with modern consumer culture, examining how capitalism packages, monetises and rapidly discards the very things that should be treasured for their temporary nature.
The result is both philosophical and visceral. Underneath the band’s abrasive art-punk delivery lies a deeper meditation on emotional exhaustion, cultural emptiness and the speed at which meaning is consumed and replaced.
With the single kicking off the rollout for their forthcoming EP, Buddy Wynkoop continue carving out a space where art-punk becomes both social commentary and emotional release in equal measure.
