Coal Chamber Albums Ranked
Coal Chamber was an American nu metal band formed by Dez Fafara and Meegs Rascón in Los Angeles, California in 1993. Prior to Coal Chamber, the two had also created the band She’s In Pain, in 1992. Coal Chamber disbanded in 2003 after ten years together and then reunited from 2011 to 2016. The band’s first drummer, Jon Tor, was eventually replaced by Mike Cox. After bass guitarist Rayna Foss joined, the Coal Chamber lineup was complete. They released their debut album, Coal Chamber, in 1997. Chamber Music followed two years later. Their third album, Dark Days, was released in the spring of 2002. The only single from the album was “Fiend”. Coal Chamber released one more album, Rivals, in 2015, before disbanding again in 2016. 4. Rivals (2015)
“I would go with Dark Days over this. Their first album is always their best because it is Coal Chamber uncompromising to the fullest degree. They have a couple instrumentals to give you something to get lost in and use your imagination. Dez is a master with bringing the listener to a powerful state of emotion especially when dealing with anger, loss, isolation, and depression, BUT uses his voice as a powerful motivator to deal with one’s own issues and get it all out when sparring, in a ring, gym, or just chilling in your room.”
3. Dark Days (2002)
“This band’s music has matured more quickly and much better than the majority of their contemporaries. Their first album had a very intense attitude providing great appeal, but the production was not up to a quality to truly show off this band’s capabilities. Their second album, “Chamber Music”, demonstrated that the band was more than willing to add more depth to their music as well as more money to provide a higher quality sound, but in exchange they lost the driving intensity that drew so much attention to their self-titled debut. Now, with “Dark Days”, they returned from the drawing board and present us with a piece of work that is a fantastic culmination of their previous efforts.
2. Coal Chamber (1997)
“Not only is “Chamber Music” far more dynamic, diverse, mature, and accessible than Coal Chamber’s self-titled 1997 debut, it is also doubtlessly the band’s finest hour. Vocalist Dez Fafara (who would, four years after this album was released, dissolve Coal Chamber to focus on his side project Devildriver) delivers both vocally and lyrically, here. His singing style is usually far less snarly and repetitive–he even sings (yes, sings) on some songs (like “My Mercy”)–and, as proven by such tracks as “Tyler’s Song,” his lyrics are solidified. Plus, guitarist Meegs Rascon is clearly a better musician than he was two years ago (he pulls out some pretty good riffs, here), and there are even some occasional keyboards sprinkled on, as well.”
