Deafheaven Albums Ranked

Deafheaven is an American post-metal band formed in 2010. Originally based in San Francisco, the group began as a two-piece with singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, who recorded and self-released a demo album together. Following its release, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the end of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads To Judah, in April 2011. A follow-up album, Sunbather, was released in 2013 to wide critical acclaim, becoming one of the best-reviewed albums of the year in the United States. In 2015 the band released its third album, New Bermuda, and in 2018 their fourth, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. Here are all of Deafheaven albums ranked.

5. Demo (2010)

“Deafheaven is a “Post-Metal/Shoegaze/Stoner/Progressive”-type band in the vein of Isis, Neurosis, and Pelican (but with vocals). It is also my new favorite as of this short but epic album. The vocals are very “black-metal-ish”, like something you would hear on an Immortal album, only distant-sounding as they are relatively low in the mix. The music is wholly reminiscent of the aforementioned bands, and together it creates a beautiful, atmospheric wall of sound that is just incredibly enjoyable”

4. Roads To Judah (2011)

“I really enjoy the way Deafheaven combines dreamy shoe gaze with blistering fast Black Metal to create a very unique sound. The tracks manage to be inspiring and peaceful while at the same time conveying anger and misery in a way I’ve never heard before.”

3. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love (2018)

“Are there any other black metal acts that make music not only exciting but also blissful? Because if there was an opponent that could possibly take away the album of the year crown from Kamasi, it’s probably this. Because I don’t find anything wrong with this. I find it fucking incredible.”

2. New Bermuda (2015)

“Attractive, wavy follow-up to sunbather- not so much intertwining the genre flames as it did on previous releases but rather splashing them all at different corners of the canvas, with very little overlap. Not as engaging or attention-perking as Sunbather, but a lovely, solid follow-up nonetheless.”

1. Sunbather (2013)

“Sunbather is a finely crafted table. Dream House, Vertigo, and The Pecan Tree function as legs that hold the album up (with Dream House comprised of two legs). The title track is the support apparatus underneath the middle of the table. Windows, Irresistible, and Please Remember are various flavors of cuisine on the table which cater to every listener’s preference. All in all, a well-rounded, rewarding listen.”
