Dokken Albums Ranked

Dokken is an American metal band formed in 1979. It split up in 1989 and reformed four years later. The band had many charting singles like (“Alone Again”, “In My Dreams” and “Burning Like a Flame”) and have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. The live album Beast from the East was nominated for the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1989. The classic Dokken lineup consisted of founder Don Dokken on vocals, George Lynch on lead guitar, Mick Brown on drums, and Jeff Pilson, who replaced the Ratt-bound Juan Croucier in 1983, on bass; this line-up remained stable from 1983 to 1989, and again from 1993 to 1998, and briefly reunited in 2016; After several personnel changes on guitar, Dokken’s attorney Jon Levin stepped in to fill the role in 2004. In 2001, Barry Sparks replaced Pilson on bass. In 2009, Sean McNabb (formerly with Great White and Quiet Riot) replaced him and was then replaced by Chris McCarvill in 2015. After Mick Brown’s retirement from the band in July 2019, Don Dokken is the only remaining original band member. Brown’s vacancy was filled by BJ Zampa of House of Lord’s fame. Dokken Albums Ranked

10. The Very Best Of Dokken (1999)

“Let’s hear it forever those mighty bands of the 80’s Dokken, Motley Crue, Cinderella, Def Leppard, RATT; just to name a few. These as well as other’s have all had their Greatest Hit’s Albums. It’s time to talk about DOKKEN, they are one of the metal band’s I loved back in the day and still do today. They have cutting edge tunes that separate them from all the other bands. On this album I loved all the songs except for the last one, just couldn’t get into to it. They are a classic band and their music still ROX to this day.”

9. One Live Night (1996)

Promo Flat Dokken / One Live Night 1

“Dokken is at their best in this awesome live acoustic concert. This is a must for all Dokken fans. As a true fan I loved seeing them play with their original guitarist on George Lynch. I’ve seen Dokken 8 times over the years and I’ve seen them with all of their replacement guitarists as well as Lynch. The last time was at the Trocadero in Philly in 2004. Rock With The Dok At The Troc! Yeah! Dokken is always awesome to see live no matter who’s on the lead guitar that night.”

8. Lightning Strikes Again (2008)

“This is a fantastic REAL Dokken record, start to finish, no question. Everything is in top form, right down to the packaging. Major kudos to these guys for just relaxing and doing what they do best in a 100% focused group effort. And Jon Levin’s guitar playing, whilst reminiscent of George isn’t in any way copying George. Don’s vocals are top-notch here. Bursting with signature Dokken melodies and harmonics, I just can’t say enough about this album and I’d rather not say any more for fear of spoiling it for anyone. Buy it, and let’s hope for yet another of it’s quality to follow!”

7. Beast From The East (1988)

“Don is clearly top of his game here. Pilson kills it on backup vocals and Lynch is on fire with a guitar sound as big as it gets. Overall the live production sound is pretty good. Love these old Dokken songs!”

6. Erase The Slate (1999)

“One very pleasant surprise you will find on ‘Erase the Slate’ is Mick Brown’s vocal debut for Dokken on “Crazy Mary Goes Round” which totally blew me away. I had NO IDEA Mick could sing that well. It is a great, fun rocker. You’ll be surprised by this one. The ballads are nice; thankfully there are no more than two (I enjoy ballads, I just don’t like to hear too many of them on a single disc). Also, I should mention that Dokken’s cover of Harry Nilsson’s “One”, as mentioned by Andy, is great. Very up-beat sound. Different than the rest of the album.”

5. Breaking The Chains (1983)

“This album is better then most beginner albums because of no filler songs, and four talented musicians that make it great. Don Dokken is a way above average singer, with a wide vocal range. George Lynch is an amazing guitar player along the likes of Eddie Van Halen greatness. Juan Croucier was an above average bass player, and could really rock. Mick Brown was an above average drummer who could really throw down on the drumset also. So, you put these hungry, young men together, and greatness is bound to happen. Yep, it happened here. Two thumbs way, way up!”

4. Dysfunctional (1995)

“This album shows a mature artistic side while encompassing their abilities as musicians. The only other Dokken album that flows like this is arguably Back For The Attack. The themes of depression, mental confusion, dysfunctional relationships and jaded memories run rampant from song to song without a break. Their cover of “From the Beginning” is second to none and provides a clean conclusion to the original album.”

3. Back For The Attack (1987)

“This is the 4th album released in 1987 by Dokken. The band is on absolute fire on this one. I recommend it to any glam metal/hard rock fan. The album starts with the furious “Kiss Of Death” (which is about aids – a new issue at the time) and ends with the title track as a bonus track on the Japan import. I can’t speak enough about this album. It is truly the Dokken masterpiece.”

2. Tooth And Nail (1984)

“This album is incredible from top to bottom … clear, melodic vocals anyone can appreciate, crunchy riffs, and awe inspiring solos for pure metal heads. If you are an 80’s metal fan, you will love every song on this album. Seriously, this is one of my top three metal records of all time … along with Metallica’s “Kill’ em All” and Tool’s “Anema”. Don Dokken (lead vocals), George Lynch (guitar), Jeff Pilson (bass) and Mick Brown (drums). You will not be disappointed!”

1. Under Lock And Key (1985)

“Under Lock & Key” is an almost essential release for fans of melodic rock from the 1980’s. There really isn’t any filler on this album, just songs that aren’t as great as the rest. This album helped solidify Dokken as one of the top-tier rock bands from the decade, but their follow-up record put them over the top. This record has everything a good 80’s rock record needs. It has catchy choruses, huge production and terrific songs throughout. It doesn’t hurt as well to have some of the best musicians available at their positions either.”
