Dream Evil is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Dio, released on July 21, 1987. It features former Rough Cutt members Craig Goldy and Claude Schnell, and includes the singles “All the Fools Sailed Away” and “I Could Have Been a Dreamer”. Dream Evil was Dio’s last album to feature Murray on the cover and also the last to feature drummer Vinny Appice until the 1993 album Strange Highways. It was also the last album to feature bassist Jimmy Bain until the release of 2000’s Magica. The album also marks Schnell’s final appearance with Dio. Here are all of Dream Evil songs ranked.

9. When a Woman Cries

“Quite a good song! Not one of my favorites on the album but it’s difinetly above mediocre. Good chorus, with not so strong of a verse, it’s a good, but not great Dio song. Just a suggestion, but I would have closed the album off with “Faces in the Window” or “All the Fools Sailed Away.”

8. Overlove

“This is another one of those fast-paced rockers like Night People. Fast, speedy guitar work throughout the whole song and a solid structure as well. Gotta enjoy the solos and the start/stop method during the transition between the verse and chorus.”

7. Naked In the Rain

“This is also probably my top three on the album! It’s just really meaningful, heavy, and an all-around good Dio song. The guitar during the chorus is very catchy and you’ll be singing “We’re Naked in the Rain” all day. I really like the vocals during the verses’ also; just something special.”

6. Night People

“A couple of keyboard notes here, a little effect there, and all of a sudden, this song races on with the best of ’em. One of the faster rockers on the album (there’s quite a few), this song doesn’t let up nor let go. The verses are sung fast with blazing guitars flowing over them and then there’s a sudden STOP and you who know it can sing with me… “Night People!” Yeah, this song rocks and happens to be one of my favorites on the album! “

5. Faces In the Window

“This masterpiece could possibly be my favorite Dio song ever next to Rainbow in the Dark, Rock n Roll Children, and Last in Line. Another speed metal-esque rocker that races on and on. The verses are very consuming and catchy, but the chorus is just phenomenol. The line “Faces in the Window, Noises in the Night, Faces in the Window, Hiding from the Light!” is almost always in my head.”

4. Sunset Superman

“This song is often overlooked by Dio fans. Don’t ask me why, because I think it’s quite a powerful Dio tune. It’s definitly has its moments (like the repetitiveness towards the end), but overall it is a solid song. The chorus is very catchy, and the main riff is sweet. Not a mediocre song at all though;”

3. I Could Have Been a Dreamer

“This is probably one of Dio’s weakest songs. Another song that, in my opinion, should not have been a greatest hit. The opening riff is sweet, and the verses’ are really interesting and good, but what kills this song is the lullaby-esque chorus. I apologize to those who really like this song, but in my opinion it’s a little weaker than most.”

2. Dream Evil

“As a Dio song itself, I believe it is a very impressive song. It’s got a great, catchy riff, powerful lyrics during the verse, and a sweet chorus. I do not think, however, that this deserves to be a greatest hit. Yes, it’s the title track, and yes it’s a great song, but I would pick many songs on this album to be a greatest hit before this song. Don’t get me wrong, Dream Evil is a great Dio song, with solos, catchy riffs, and everything else we love about the band, but it is just a tad too weak to be deemed a “greatest hit.”

1. All the Fools Sailed Away

“Here’s a spectacular song! This is the ballad off the album and it’s one of the most meaningful and powerful ballads I’ve heard. You can just tell Ronnie put a lot of effort into writing and singing this beauty! The guitar during the verses is heavy, though slow, and the vocals are really distriputed well as far as tone and range. The chorus is also very well done, and it’s really sweet that Dio got a group to sing a very of the chorus’ with him. Also a little side note: This song is on the Dio: Anthology along with Dream Evil. It’s just kind of sweet, because it’s not the “expected” song.”
