Gernz find the funny side of life’s little disasters on infectious new single ‘OW!’
South Australian alternative rock outfit Gernz have returned with ‘OW!’, a brilliantly offbeat new single that takes the universally miserable experience of smashing your toe into something and turns it into a surprisingly thoughtful reflection on life’s passing pains.
Right from the start, the track draws from the raw immediacy of 90s alternative rock, pairing punchy guitars with an instantly memorable chorus and the band’s trademark sense of humour. Produced, mixed and mastered by Thomas Wilson in Mount Gambier, ‘OW!’ carries echoes of Pixies, The Breeders and Nirvana while retaining plenty of Gernz’s own personality.
What began as a joke gradually developed into something more meaningful. Vocalist Liam Brown recognised a parallel between sudden physical pain and those unexpected emotional blows that can temporarily feel overwhelming before eventually fading.
With their debut EP on the horizon, Gernz continue to prove that alt-rock can be catchy, thoughtful and wonderfully ridiculous all at once.
