Greensky Bluegrass Albums Ranked

Greensky Bluegrass is a five-piece American bluegrass jam band founded in Kalamazoo, Michigan in mid-2000. The band has evolved over the years, growing from 3 to 5 members, adding electric effects, and touring with a full light show. Partly because of their name, many articles written about the band address the fact that what Greensky does is “not quite” bluegrass. In their own promotional material, GSBG describes their sound as “their own version of bluegrass music, mixing the acoustic stomp of a string band with the rule-breaking spirit of rock & roll”. Here are all of Greensky Bluegrass albums ranked.

6. All For Money

“Nothing much new under the GSB umbrella but we’d probably a complain if they did. Perhaps a bit heavy on the Paul Hoffman songs, granted he’s the bands best singer but it gets a little tiring listening to song after song of him. I do like how they stretch some of these songs out like the weird title track or “Courage of the Road” but at the end of the day my favorites stick to the classic GSB formula – “Ashes” and “What You Need”. Not as strong as their last two albums but still staying in the ring.

5. Handguns

“Excellent album- I’ve already listened to it hundreds of times along with their others they have put out. Greensky is a excellent band- we love seeing them in concert! Love listening to their albums while driving, working, relaxing, or running- fits every mood!”

4. Shouted, Written Down & Quoted

“Not quite up to If Sorrows Swim but about on par as far as the song quota goes. A little hit and miss but how many albums do you have with four great songs? “Past My Prime”, “Room Without a Roof”, “More of Me” and “Living Over” are the songs that keep playing at my house. Even calling this bluegrass might be pushing it, but a fine acoustic band all the same.”

3. Less Than Supper

“Greensky Bluegrass is one of the best bands out there today, and this is their best album to date. Obviously they’re bluegrass, but you can hear influences ranging from jazz to eastern. All members are master musicians and a joy to listen to.”

2. Stress Dreams

“Luckily, despite the bands insistence on incorporating these non-stimulating ideas, there are quite a few times where their adventurous spirit comes out. Easily, the best track on Stress Dreams is the 8-minute epic title track. Its loose arrangement allows the band to accelerate and play with reconstructing the mandolin, piano, dobro, and guitar sections—a sparkling jam reminiscent of lightning bugs in a backyard. Its a truly invigorating moment.”

1. If Sorrows Swim

“Pretty impressive album from this outfit from Michigan that manages to land somewhere between bluegrass, country and folk, and does it without sounding cheesy. In fact I think this album would sound great on the modern country channels. Some great songs as well like opener “Windshield”, “Demons”, “Burn Them” and “Kerosene”. Live this outfit get more into a jamgrass sound, but _If Sorrows Swim_ is all about the songs, and a fine job they did.”
