Jamaica Say You Will Songs Ranked

Jamaica Say You Will is the fifth studio album by Joe Cocker, released in April 1975. The songs from the album come from the same sessions that produced the highly acclaimed LP I Can Stand A Little Rain (1974). Jamaica Say You Will wasn’t, however, as successful as its predecessor. It reached number 42 on the US album charts. It includes participation by Randy Newman; rhythm section on most of the songs is played by the Kingpins, formerly known for being saxophonist King Curtis’ backing band, including Bernard “Pretty” Purdie on drums. “(That’s What I Like) In My Woman” is a fast-driven song with horns, “Where Am I Now” and “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today” are segued and complementary – the sentiment of each song reflected in the other. “Oh Mama” is pure vocal blues, accompanied by a saxophone. The over-all influence is soul and blues. The album winds up acoustically, with a simply arranged, folk-flavoured tune, “Jack-A-Diamonds”. Here are all of Jamaica Say You Will songs ranked.

10. (That’s What I Like) In My Woman

“This was and continues to be one of the greatest albums of all time. In fact, it gets better as I get older. I’m less focused now on the strength and control of the voice, more on the pure human feeling he pours into it.”

9. I Think It’s Going to Rain Today

“Throughout Cocker is on form, with his gravelly soul laden trademark vocals alternately caressing the words or powering through the song with an electrifying intensity.”

8. Oh Mama

“A fantastic anthology covering Cocker’s early works, then into the 80’s. Although he was known for covering other people’s songs Joe and his band always re-worked the songs so they sounded fresh.”

7. If I Love You

“Joe cocker has such a distinctive voice and really sings from the soul. Great!! He is also the only one that can sing another bands cover song and make it completely different and make it a great song”

6. It’s All Over But the Shoutin’

“Not much has to be said about this man and his talent! He was unique and entertaining. The fact that he took an incredibly popular Beatles song and made it his own say’s it all!!”

5. Jack-A-Diamonds

“Joe Cocker maybe more famous for his near fits on stage than for his music. If that is so, it’s a shame because the man can really sing and make a song a masterpiece for many generations.”

4. Jamaica Say You Will

“Oh, the soulful singing of Joe Cocker! It just seems like he could do no wrong. The music is infectious, emotional and sultry. It’s funny that I forgot how much he defined a lot of music in the 70’s.”

3. Lucinda

“There are just no words to express that there are very few singers that have shown to have such a distinctive style at the voice alone, that it is unrecognizable for a younger generation of performers. There are very few artists of today that have really complimented that with style and soul. “

2. Forgive Me Now

“Joe Cocker was honestly one of those singers that really did show a beautiful and soulful style that wasn’t just bluesy, it was a style that really was better than most artists can do covers and new songs to call their own.”

1. Where Am I Now

“An unbelievably individual voice coupled with a high level of demanding judgement on songs that suit his voice and on how to perform them to capture the listener. He deservedly will be remembered for these for a long time.”
