Rocket to Russia Songs Ranked

Rocket to Russia is the third studio album by the American punk rock band the Ramones and was released on November 4, 1977, through Sire Records. Its origins date back to the summer of 1977, when “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker” was released as a single. That summer was known as the peak of the punk rock genre since many punk bands were offered recording contracts. The album’s recording began in August 1977, and the band had a considerably larger budget with Sire allowing them between $25,000 and $30,000; much of this money went toward the album’s production rather than recording. The album’s cover art was directed by John Gillespie. John Holmstrom and guitarist Johnny Ramone both worked on illustration, with the entire back cover contemplating a military theme, while the inner sleeve artwork depicted many of the themes portrayed in songs. The subject matter of songs varied throughout the album, though nearly all the tracks on the album incorporated humor into the lyrics. The musical style showed more of a surf rock influence, and many songs had minimal structuring. Here are all of Rocket to Russia songs ranked.

10. I Wanna Be Well

“This is an album that has influenced much of the rock and roll that came after it. I enjoyed listening to it as a kid when I found it in my parents’ record collection.”

9. I Don’t Care

“I don’t care – very similar to their debut’s “Judy is a punk”. Made me wonder if I got the wrong track on the debut album. Has a sort of grungy guitar sound quality to it.”

8. Surfin’ Bird

“This work of artistic contribution from the Ramones is one of the most treasured in my collection of vinyl because of its applicability of punk rock and its musicality of heart and soul. This record is one of the most iconic pieces of history of its time and is further boosted by this through its nature of being “real”.”

7. Do You Wanna Dance?

“There’s a lot to love here. This release was one of the first from the Ramones and I firmly believe it is one of the best out there. If you don’t purchase this record, then your collection is not complete in the least. Save yourself the trouble and purchase this.”

6. Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

“All the bands that claim to be punk today owe alot to THE RAMONES who paved the way for these so called Punk Rock Bands that are all over the radio today. While most of these bands may go on to make more money and sell more albums than THE RAMONES one thing is for sure, they’ll never be half as good as THE RAMONES.”

5. Cretin Hop

“I’d recommend this cd to anyone into punk, since these guys invented punk rock. Even people who are not that much into punk (like myself) will find it enjoyable. These guys seriously know how to rock and roll, and the lyrics are hilarious!!

4. We’re a Happy Family

“We’re a happy family – ironic and sarcastic in tone. About a dysfunctional family. The outro has Joey singing in a faux English accent…the next track on the album has this too…part of that English punk influence I mentioned in the header.”

3. Teenage Lobotomy

“This album is a straightforward, succinct, turbo-charged, aggressive, heavy, sometimes poppy, three chord surf and rock music. An unprecedentedly perfect musical expression of punk attitude, effectively conveyed without cuss words. “

2. Rockaway Beach

“Rockaway Beach – sort of a Beach Boys style song. Some lyrics are similar to “Rock’n’roll High School” which features in their later album “End of the century”.

1. Sheena is a Punk Rocker

“This is one of the top ten rock albums of the last 25 years. It’s a raw, influential masterpiece. This is the punk rock that started it all. Make sure you get the recently remastered version with the bonus tracks. Then do the same with Ramones Leave Home, and Rocket To Russia. After that, you’re on your own.”
