Mad Season Albums Ranked

Mad Season was an American rock supergroup formed in 1994 as a side project of members of other bands in the Seattle grunge scene. The band’s principal members included guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, lead singer Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees and bassist John Baker Saunders. Mad Season released only one album, Above, in March 1995. Its first single, “River of Deceit”, was a radio success, and Above was certified a gold record by the RIAA in June. The band went on a semi-permanent hiatus in 1996 due to the band members’ conflicting schedules and Staley’s problems with substance abuse. Attempts were made in the late 1990s to revive the group without Staley, and material for a follow-up release to Above had been worked on; however, the band dissolved following the death of bassist John Baker Saunders in 1999 from a drug overdose. Staley also died of a drug overdose three years later. Martin and McCready have since made two short partial reunions, one in 2012 and one from 2014 to 2015. A special edition box set containing a remastered edition of Above and various unreleased material was released in March 2013. Here are all of the Mad Season’s albums ranked.

3. Live At The Moore (2015)

Mad Season - Live at the Moore - Amazon.com Music

“One of the greatest live performances of all time has finally seen a proper vinyl release, and it’s a fantastic one. The packaging is sturdy and beautiful, with extensive liner notes that capture the story of this magical performance. The sound quality is about as good as you will find for a live recording. Once you drop the needle and close your eyes, you will truly feel like you’re in the theater witnessing greatness. A must-own for any fan of Layne Staley, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, or any grunge music.”

2. Sonic Evolution (2015)

MAD SEASON / SEATTLE SYMPHONY / SONIC EVOLUTION DIGITAL DOWNLOAD – Ten Club LLC

“This was an amazing show – I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was totally shocked to see that there was an audio CD made available and bought one right away, but obviously they were very limited. If you can somehow get your hands on one, I highly recommend it. Sounds is very good for a live recording too. Mike, Barrett, Duff, Chris, Matt, Jeff, Stone, Sean…”

1. Above (1995)

Mad Season Above-2 Album Cover Sticker

“The sound of “above” is unique. Mad Season really had their own sound. Layne sang in a way that didn’t make you think much of AIC (maybe in “Lifeless Dead” and “I don’t know anything”).The sound of McReady is unique as well and only in his guitar solos you’ll think of Pearl Jam. Barret and Saunders play amazingly.”
