6. Node

“It’s always so fascinating when records like Node surface. You know, the ones that scream “look, we’ve changed!!!!”, and a previously abysmal band is now actually okay, and the music world has to decide whether or not the album is actually good, or just comparatively good. Albums like Sempiternal come to mind, as well as the more similarly aligned Language, which along with Node see the bands leaving behind the childish areas of metalcore and deathcore in favour of more melodic pieces, and “”progressive metal””, to mixed results.”

5. Singularity

“As for the metalcore parts this album is not very much special at all. Though the awesomeness comes in the few songs that are quite djent infuenced (for instance the opening track), which are very nice and almost experimental compared to the rest of the album. Too bad that 2-3 very good tracks can not keep the otherwise quite mediocre album up. So as said, a few brilliant tracks, but that ain’t enough to save the album from being rather dull and boring as a whole.”

4. Obsidian

“With the band’s sixth full-length album they continue to explore and develop the industrial and cyber metal elements they incorporated into their already metalcore and djent sound. Although the length can make the album diverge a bit, especially with the latter half of the album, “Obsidian” is a really worthwhile listen for any metal fan out there because of how catchy and mesmerizing it all is. The sound is diverse enough from track to track to keep you engaged, but it feels as a cohesive listen for the 56-minutes it’s on. Very solid listening experience!”

3. Alien

“Album number five finds the band treading new territory and finally coming into their own as a unique entity worthy of being distinguished from their peers. They explore plenty of new styles, as well as overhauling the core of their sound in a completely different direction that shares many sonic variables with their old sound with few stylistic ones. This is the best step forward they’ve ever taken in their entire career, and that’s coming from somebody who likes their previous efforts.”

2. Mesmer

“Mesmer is an album that usually gets overlooked when looking at Northlane’s discography to date. This has several reasons: One, the album was released without any notice. That works for Beyoncé, but it’s not really a model a middle-sized Metalcore band can make work for themselves (I’m aware of the Cancer Bats’ The Spark That Moves, but that was probably their best release since 2012 so the standards are a little different here).”

1. Discoveries

“When this album came out , theyd thrown away a lot of their “generic” tendencies for more progressive ones, and thats what many “core” bands should be doing to make their music interesting. Anyways, brilliant riffs, great production and guitar tones. ambient chords/landscapes at times, all add up to a really good listen. Definitely check it out.”
