Outsideness blow their world wide open on the brilliant ‘…Then After?’

On their eagerly-awaited sophomore album ‘…Then After?’, rising duo Outsideness take everything intriguing about ‘…From What?’ and push it into a bigger, stranger and more colourful space.

Freidrich$ and Azalias move freely through R&B, rock, acoustic songwriting, UK garage, drum and bass, IDM and experimental pop, often within the same track. Yet it never feels like genre-hopping for its own sake, as styles are treated as raw material, bent and reshaped until songs become almost impossible to predict.

Throughout the release, intimate passages erupt into larger arrangements, acoustic textures give way to electronic percussion, and songs fracture, rebuild or drift somewhere unexpected.

But it’s Azalias that remains the emotional anchor. Her vocals can feel close and conversational one moment, then suddenly soar, giving Freidrich$ room to push the production further without losing the human centre.

The record is more ambitious than its predecessor, but also more immediate. The melodies are stronger, the arrangements richer, and the emotional stakes higher, yet the rough edges remain.

A more cautious record might tidy up the abrupt transitions, unusual endings and structural detours. Outsideness let them stand, trusting that the instability is part of the thrill.

In all, ‘…Then After?’ feels like the moment the duo realise how far this project can stretch. Bigger, bolder and bursting with ideas, it’s the sound of a creative partnership discovering that its greatest strength may be having absolutely no ceiling at all.
