Phoenix Songs Ranked

Phoenix is a French indie pop band from Versailles, France, consisting of Thomas Mars (lead vocals), Deck d’Arcy (bass/keyboards/backing vocals), Christian Mazzalai (guitar/backing vocals), and Laurent Brancowitz (guitar/keyboards/backing vocals). While they have released such critically acclaimed records as United and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, they are best known for their singles “If I Ever Feel Better”, “Lisztomania”, “Too Young” and “1901”. In 2017, Phoenix collaborated with Tatenokawa, Inc., a brewery from Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, as a tribute to their late friend Toshiro Kuroda, a Japanese restaurateur who ran a store in Paris called Workshop Issei which offered food and sake from Japan. This store was on the ground floor of Christian Mazzalai’s apartment building, which is how he became friends with Kuroda. During the band’s Japan tour while promoting Bankrupt!, Kuroda took the band to visit sake breweries in Japan, one of which was Tatenokawa, Inc. Here are all of Phoenix’s songs ranked.

14. Lasso (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, 2009)

“I like this song, because this song is very dynamic and with lot of action! I like this song because in this song a lot of sense!”

13. Girlfriend (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, 2009)

“This could be interpreted in a lot of ways…but I think it’s about a guy breaking up with a girl who doesn’t have any aspirations. “You try out for nothing then you drop dead” The line “die and succeed” makes sense to me in the context…that it you have no goals, and you just complain about how bitterly unfair your life is, you might as well die, and that’s your success.”

12. Consolation Prizes (It’s Never Been Like That, 2006)

“I don’t really get what the song is about but I love the line “My heart is waiting for a new you.” This song is really good, it puts me in a happy mood.. even though some of the lyrics don’t seem very positive.”

11. Armistice (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, 2009)

“Phoenix have done injustice to themselves by not putting this song higher in the record. Such an amazing song, so catchy. Needed one more chorus at the end then I would have called it the perfect song.”

10. Bourgeois (Bankrupt!, 2013)

“First single Entertainment is probably (and not surprisingly) the catchiest song of the set, but it’s other gems, like Bourgeois, that represent the group exploring a new sonic palette and churning out a near masterpiece in the process. On this track specifically, T. Mars shows he has lost none of his ability to effortlessly meld words and melody, singing “you lost your mind on a cruise ship bartending crucial lies / we’re destined, wise and we socialize” over a glorious synth line and beat”

9. Lost and Found (It’s Never Been Like That, 2006)

“Personally, I am in love love with these lyrics and the melody and how they perform so well together. I have to say one of my favorites by far from Phoenix.”

8. Napolean Says (It’s Never Been Like That, 2006)

“Right hand in a trench coat! Right hand in a trench COAT! Definitely a highlight on Phoenix’s junior album “It’s Never Been Like That”. Interesting lyrics as well. I can definitely picture Napolean riding in a trench coat when listening to this song.”

7. Drakkar Noir (Bankrupt!, 2013)

“This album caught my attention immediately from the first track. Great guitar AND keyboard driven pop/rock with some very catchy melodies, to which the vocals just seem to suit perfectly to make it even catchier.”

5. Too Young (United, 2000)

“I have to admit that Phoenix didn’t impress me too much when I heard them first. But their songs just grow and grow on me with repeated listens. You start to notice all the little touches, whether from the drums, little guitar or synth pieces or the wonderful lead vocals, always restrained but never holding back either.”

4. Rome (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, 2009)

“Saw them live and when they performed this song I was blown away by how amazing it was. Need less to say it became my favorite song by them. Different, yet undeniably catchy. Definitely one of their best!”

3. Long Distance Call (It’s Never Been Like That, 2006)

“Another perfect pop song from one of the grooviest bands ever. This song manages to be bother mellow and upbeat at the same time. Great driving song.”
