PROJECT: Beyond find meaning in what remains on new single ‘The End’

After three years without new music, PROJECT: Beyond return with a track that feels shaped as much by time as by songwriting. ‘The End’ is the Bergen band’s fifth single, and instead of treating its long gestation as something to hide, the group allows those years of change, grief and accumulated experience to become part of the song itself.

Formed by Johann Kjørsvik Lothe and Stefan Åsheim, the band works from a firmly DIY foundation, writing, producing and mixing their own material while also handling much of the surrounding visual identity. There’s a humility to that process, but also a clear sense of ownership, with the rough edges evidence of the people who made the work and the point they had reached when they made it.

‘The End’ takes that idea and turns it inward. At its centre is the belief that no ending exists on its own. People leave, circumstances shift, moments pass, but what disappears still has a way of shaping what comes next. The song was written years ago, yet later experiences of hardship and loss have changed how the band now understands it, adding new emotional weight without erasing the meaning it carried at the beginning.

Musically, that sense of movement suits the band well. Their sound sits somewhere across the spectrum of modern alt-rock, but they prefer to allow songs to change direction when the emotion demands it. Melody keeps things grounded, while shifts in structure and intensity give the music a more exploratory quality.

With this long-awaited return, PROJECT: Beyond use the idea of an ending to explore everything that remains attached to it. Thoughtful, melodic and quietly ambitious, it’s a welcome comeback from a group increasingly comfortable with letting meaning unfold beyond the song itself.
