Reinventing The Steel Songs Ranked

Reinventing the Steel is the ninth and final studio album by American heavy metal band Pantera, released on March 21, 2000 through East West Records. It was reissued in October 2020 with extra discs including a new mix by Terry Date and unreleased tracks to honor the album’s 20th anniversary. Reinventing the Steel contains lyrics mostly about the band itself, as on “We’ll Grind that Axe for a Long Time” (where the band members tell about how they have kept it “true” throughout the years, while many of their peers “sucked up for the fame”) and “I’ll Cast a Shadow” (about Pantera’s influence on the genre). There are also songs about their fans, like “Goddamn Electric” and “You’ve Got to Belong to It”. “Goddamn Electric” mentions Black Sabbath and Slayer, two of Pantera’s main influences. The band members dedicated Reinventing the Steel to their fans who they viewed as their “brothers and sisters”. Here are all of Reinventing The Steel songs ranked.

10. Hellbound

“Hellbound” is a short and great opening track that gets the album off to a wickedly heavy, blood-pumping start with a sonic onslaught of intense, pumping riffs, catchy, bouncing, and boom-boom-like sounding drumming, and some awesomely brutal vocals, but the song gets even more better when it’s fast and thrashy, aggressive chorus kicks in which features some even more aggressive guitars and drums, and some really awesome, shrieky, ear-shattering howls from Phil which just makes you think, “Oh, hell yeah” everytime you listen to it.”

9. Uplift

“Uplift” which is yet another awesome song which includes some excellent bass playing from Rex Brown, along with more awesome riff work, including some really cool guitar noises, pounding drums, and excellent, brutal, and intense vocals all around throughout.”

8. We’ll Grind That Ax for a Long Time

“We’ll Grind That Axe For a Long Time” is another great heavy grinder of a tune that is 100% pure and true Pantera both lyrically as well as in style as it is drenched with massively grinding, and powerful verse grooves, and some seriously sick, teeth-grinding, and gut-punching choruses, and Phil’s vocals also deliver as they always do as well, and Vinnie even delivers some really cool double bass fills too as well.”

7. You’ve Got to Belong to It

“You’ve Got to Belong to It” is another impressive song that boasts more amazingly heavy riffs aplenty from Dimebag throughout mixing bone-crushing and ear-pounding power chords and screaming melodies together, along with solid, rattling, double bass drum work from Vinnie Paul, and awesomely ferocious vocal deliveries from Phil as well, and the chorus is just fantastic, and I also dig the atmospheric interlude in the middle too.”

6. It Makes Them Disappear

“It Makes Them Disappear” is a more longer and slower paced song (and the longest song on the album, at 6 minutes and 21 seconds) that contains a very suspenseful-like intro, along with excellent riffing by Dimebag that have such a real heavy and grinding-like feel throughout, and Phil’s vocals here also tend to shine here as he delivers some excellent melodic sung vocals during the verses, and he also belts out intense and powerful screams during the chorus, plus Vinnie also dominates the chorus with some great double bass fills too, and Dimebag tops off the song with an excellent solo to boot.”

5. I’ll Cast a Shadow

“I’ll Cast a Shadow” which closes out the album in pure Pantera fashion as the song is dominated by monstrously heavy, hot scalding, teeth-grinding, hellraising riffing, dominating double bass drum work, and powerful vocals from Phil, plus the song also contains an amazingly intense and powerful chorus that just absolutely dominates with sheer authority.”

4. Yesterday Don’t Mean S***

” “Yesterday Don’t Mean S—” is also another favorite of mine that keeps the ante going here with some excellent, fast, surging, galloping riffs, and energetic, heart thumping drum beats, and awesome vocals and lyrics by Phil throughout, and he certainly makes his point very clear on this song here, especially during the chorus which is also a huge highlight, but however it is Dimebag’s blistering, screaming, ripping, and shredding solo in the song that really steals the show for me”

3. Death Rattle

“Death Rattle” is also another one of my favorite tracks that features some excellent, fast, and urgent drumming by Vinnie Paul, and we’re also treated with yet more of Dime’s excellent riffs as well as a great, demonic chorus that is just downright addicting and fun. The riffs in this song are just fast, brutal, and surging, they just grind and throb like crazy through your stereo speakers, and Phil’s vocals here are as brutal as brutal can truly get.”

2. God**** Electric

“G–damn Electric” is also another big time highlight on here that features a catchy, galloping beat with head-pounding drums, and brisk, hot grinding, and ear scorching riffing, plus a slow, plodding, yet blisteringly heavy chorus, and of course a sick, sizzling, wailing, and shred-tastic guitar solo by Dime also highlight this song here, plus Slayer’s Kerry King uncorks a sick solo in the song’s outro too as well.”

1. Revolution Is My Name

“My absolute favorite, “Revolution is My Name” which is just a heavy, straight forward, no-nonsense metal anthem that features an awesome intro that makes way for a brew of catchy, crunching, and chugging guitars, catchy drum rhythms, and excellent vocals from Phil throughout which are mostly sung melodically and howled throughout.”
