Roxette Songs Ranked

Roxette was a Swedish pop rock duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson (vocals and keyboards) and Per Gesslen (vocals and guitar). Formed in 1986, the duo became an international act in the late 1980s, when they released their breakthrough second album Look Sharp! Their third album Joyride, released in 1991, became just as successful as its predecessor. Roxette went on to achieve nineteen UK Top 40 hits, and several US Hot 100 hits, including four US number-ones with “The Look”, “Listen to Your Heart”, “It Must Have Been Love”, featured on the soundtrack of Pretty Woman, and “Joyride”. Their other hits include “Dressed for Success”, “Dangerous”, and “Fading Like a Flower”. Before coming together to form the duo, Fredriksson and Gessle were already established artists in Sweden, she having released a number of solo albums and he being the lead singer and songwriter of Gyllene Tider, a band that had three No. 1 albums. On the advice of the managing director of their record label, the two came together to record “Neverending Love”, which became a hit single in Sweden. Here are all of Roxette songs ranked.

10. Perfect Day (Joyride, 1991)

“This is by far the best and most haunting ballad Roxette has ever made. Not releasing it as a single was very odd. For those that don’t know, watch Marie sing this song in the making of tourism video. Just awesome”

9. She’s Got Nothing on (But the Radio) (Charm School, 2011)

“The Look is obviously Roxette’s best song, but I voted for this one, because it is criminally underrated.  Nice modern Song with the typical Roxette-Sound.

8. Spending My Time (Joyride, 1991)

“Possibly, the most ’emotionally charged’ song by band, as well as being one of their most underrated singles – in my opinion, in the same league as ‘Listen to Your Heart’.”

7. Fading Like a Flower (Joyride, 1991)

“Very catchy tune recorded right before pop music dropped into the abyss. Slightly mystified why this isn’t more appreciated than it is. It’s what they do and how they do it – smashing ABBA-esque pop, heavy on both hook and melody, and when given ballad material, Marie is her generations Agnetha.”

6. Silver Blue (Tourism, 1992)

“Probably the best Roxette song. It’s full of emotions that have left me absolutely happy! And sometimes my mornings are much more wonderful when I see the silver blue and listen to the song with such title.”

5. Dressed for Success (Look Sharp!, 1988)

“This song is so cool and is so different to many other songs in that it has a kind of dialogue. Such a catchy lively tune. I like it much better than their bigger hits. Light pop perfectly delivered by Marie. A great one live!”

4. Joyride (Joyride, 1991)

“I adore Roxette to this day, they just never get old! Their 80’s albums are still their best work and are widely known, and for good reason. Though they may be pop, you can’t help but hear the songs on the radio and tap your feet.”

3. The Look (Look Sharp!, 1988)

“This has been one of my favorite songs for 30 Years! So upbeat and rhythmic and ALWAYS put me in a good mood despite what was going on in my life! This is the song that got me hooked on them. I could listen to it on repeat forever.”

2. Listen to Your Heart (Look Sharp!, 1988)

“On paper, there’s nothing special about it. It’s a midtempo ballad with just enough rock to keep it from getting flimsy. The lyrics are a bit off the norm – a cautionary tale to a former lover – while still being familiar pop ground. The piano line draws me in, and the performance is solid without being overwrought. It certainly sounded better than most of AC radio at the time.”

1. It Must Have Been Love (It Must Have Been Love, 1987)

“Not only did they have such an amazing sound, their vocals were so addictive and so brilliant- and their lyrics? So intriguing, with beautiful metaphors laced throughout. I love this band so much!”
