Spring Colours turn restlessness into an emo rush on ‘Femur in the Dust’
Toronto’s Spring Colours unleash the brilliantly titled ‘Femur in the Dust (Who Told You There’s a Better Life!?)’, a thrilling standout from debut album The Courage Cloak.
Built around driving hooks and a restless collision of emo, indie-pop, chiptune and noise-pop, the track captures everything intriguing about the band’s self-described “digital-emo” sound. There’s grit underneath its immediate melodies, with vocalist Lukas Lyjak tracing its outlook back to the Slavic mentality he grew up around: life can be exhausting and unfair, so you simply keep moving.
Recorded largely at Toronto’s Dreamhouse Studios, the album draws from The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie, Tokyo Police Club, Wolf Parade and Foxing, while pushing those influences towards something distinctly modern.
Following an East Coast Canadian tour and sold-out hometown album release show, Spring Colours are taking their fifth-wave emo beyond the DIY circuit, and ‘Femur in the Dust’ makes a wonderfully chaotic introduction.
