The Offspring Albums Ranked

The Offspring is an American rock band from Garden Grove, California, formed in 1984. Originally formed under the name Manic Subsidal, the band’s current lineup consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Bryan “Dexter” Holland, bassist Todd Morse, guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman and drummer Pete Parada. Over the course of their 36-year career, they have released nine studio albums and experienced lineup changes, most noticeably with their drummers. Their longest-serving drummer was Ron Welty, who replaced original drummer James Lilja in 1987, and stayed with the band for 16 years; he was replaced by Atom Willard in 2003, and then four years later by Parada. Gregory “Greg K.” Kriesel, one of the co-founders of The Offspring, was their bassist until 2018 when he parted ways due to business disputes with the band, leaving Holland as the sole remaining original member. Kriesel was replaced by Todd Morse of H2O, who had previously worked with The Offspring as their touring guitarist. The Offspring is often credited—alongside fellow California punk bands Green Day, Rancid, Bad Religion, NOFX, and Pennywise—for reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the 1990s. They have sold over 40 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling punk rock bands in history.  The Offspring achieved its first commercial success with their third studio album, Smash (1994), which has sold over eleven million copies worldwide, setting a record for most albums sold on an independent record label, and was the first album released on Epitaph to obtain gold and platinum status. After switching record labels from Epitaph to Columbia in 1996, the Offspring continued their commercial success with its next six studio albums: Ixnay on the Hombre (1997), Americana (1998), Conspiracy of One (2000), Splinter (2003), Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (2008) and Days Go By (2012); the first four were certified platinum, multi-platinum, platinum, and gold status by the RIAA respectively. The band is currently in production of their tenth studio album, tentatively due for release in 2020 or 2021. Here are all The Offspring albums ranked.

9. Days Go By (2012)

“I love all of the Offspring albums but over time I have noted a gradual rise in the commercial/mainline content of the albums which after Rise and Fall I was slowly accepting that Dexter and Noodles had finally lost their raw edge which was so brilliantly illustrated in Smash but age has it’s price and we all slow down eventually.”

8. Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace (2008)

“There has been much improvement all around. Dexter’s singing is better and brighter, and he throws away fewer of the words (something he has done on earlier albums). It’s well-arranged and organized, the lyrics are well-planned, and there is so much joy in this album. In their five-year absence from the studio, the talent has not worn away. Gone are the cynic tones of “Americana”; the dark lyrics of “Conspiracy”; the experimental colouring of “Splinter”. It is not another “Ixnay” or “Smash”, but it is nonetheless enjoyable for that.”

7. The Offspring (1989)

“In my opinion this is the best Offspring Album ever made! It is a piece of art and you will really love it! I get it, Offspring also has some really good albums like Ignition, Smash, Ixnay on the Hombre, & Americana; but in my opinion none like this one. This is not only a rare Offspring Jewel, it is also their best album ever.”

6. Splinter (2003)

“If you’re and Offspring fan you must have this for your collection, one of their best songs “Can’t Get My Head Around You” whether album version or live, it rocks. Plaus many other great songs.”

5. Conspiracy Of One (2000)

“I actually only finally listened to this album in 2018 and wow, it holds up. I can’t point to songs that were as catchy as those off Smash and Americana, but the entire album is just… really good. No weak songs and the band delivers on lyrics, music, and rhythm with a few memorable entries.”

4. Ignition (1992)

“I won’t give you a track by track critique, but I will say the original version of Dirty Magic found here is one of their best recordings ever (much better than the remake on a later album). And while LAPD still proves a point, it’s a very dated song and I’m assuming they don’t play this song these days. Session is such a great adrenaline-pumping opener, Burn It Up is still hilariously psychotic, and Forever And A Day is the perfect choice to end the record.”

3. Ixnay On The Hombre (1997)

“While a few songs do feel a bit forced at times, there’s no denying that this has some of the most memorable songs by The Offspring and is a really good follow-up from Smash, and as an album on it’s own, it’s still a great time thanks to its great production and memorable material a plenty..”

2. Americana (1998)

“To me, this CD is simply brilliant. The Offspring never fail to disappoint and this CD, as a whole, looks at American society with a critical view that only they can deliver.”

1. Smash (1994)

“The Offspring’s breakthrough Smash is a really enjoyable punk album which has plenty of attitude and contains some of the bands best songs. Self Esteem is a really clever and moving song about an abusive relationship. Come out and play is again has really subtle lyrics and I love the Arabian sounding guitar bridge. The Alice in Chains sounding Gotta Get Away is another good one the title tack is quite humorous.”
