Thiago Trosso goes bigger, louder and bolder on new album ‘Magnet’

Brazilian-born, London-based songwriter Thiago Trosso throws everything into ‘Magnet’, a vibrant new album that pulls together pop-punk, indie rock, folk and ska without losing sight of his instinct for a huge melody.

Opener ‘Dead To Me’ wastes no time, charging forward on thrashing guitars and pop-punk vocals before ‘Coma Calm’ swings between restrained passages and explosive choruses. Recent single ‘Future’s Looking Bright’ keeps that momentum flying.

The record becomes particularly interesting when he changes direction. ‘More Than Friends’ strips things back for a sentimental exploration of lost love, while ‘Cheap Wine and Sad Melodies’ blossoms into a bright, summery indie-rock anthem.

Elsewhere, ‘The Phoenix’ injects playful brass and flashes of mid-2000s ska into the mix, drawing naturally on Trosso’s long history within punk, ska and reggae.

After the familiar ‘I’ll Take The Stairs’, unreleased closer ‘RIP’ brings everything gently back to earth with female backing vocals and a cinematic arrangement.

Energetic, melodic and impressively varied, ‘Magnet’ captures an experienced songwriter sounding increasingly comfortable pulling every side of his musical past into one place.
