Vanessa Carlton Albums Ranked

Vanessa Lee Carlton (born August 16, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. Upon completion of her education at the School of American Ballet, Carlton chose to pursue singing instead, performing in New York City bars and clubs while attending college. Three months after recording a demo with producer Peter Zizzo, she signed with A&M Records. Her debut single, “A Thousand Miles”, reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2002. Her debut album, Be Not Nobody, followed and received a platinum certification in the United States. Her subsequent albums, Harmonium (2004) and Heroes & Thieves (2007), failed to match the commercial success of the first. She produced a fourth album, Rabbits on the Run (2011), independently before seeking a record label to release it. Carlton released a Christmas EP titled Hear the Bells in November 2012, and released her fifth studio album, Liberman, on October 23, 2015. Here are all of Vanessa Carlton albums ranked.

7. Love Is An Art

“It’s a bit surprising that Vanessa Carlton would land on this sound after her major hit, a more alternative-sounding s/s album instead of pop ballads, but here we are – Carlton sounds good on these songs, with a shier, less saccharine vocal backing sparser songs – it’s promising and interesting, but I feel it does lack memorable songs in its catalog – they’re all serviceable, but the lack of hooks and atmosphere makes this less remarkable than it should be.”

6. Liberman Live

“This live offering from Vanessa Carlton is really well done it just could have been so much more for instance a thousand miles is available only from the digital download not on the physical. If you have Lieberman the deluxe edition then you have two versions of all of these songs already and kind of up to you if you’re a fan to buy a third version. I did and I’m happy.”

5. Heroes & Thieves

“Wasn’t expecting much from this one, but it turned out to be surprisingly good, mostly because Carlton seems to have twigged that a snappy tune is twice as effective in a song that actually means something. Stevie Nicks shows up, which is a good indicator as to where the album’s heart lies.”

4. Harmonium

“Harmonium” is a goth-tinged, piano-based pop record that uses lots of classical, chamber sounds and compositional strategies that make everything sound a lot more left-field than one would think. The song “Annie” could be a Classical piece were it not for the use of drums and handclaps. Vanessa is such a gifted pianist and paired with strings, it’s a winning combination, but also definitely not what people were listening to on the radio in Autumn 2004.”

3. Liberman

“This is a fantastic, thought provoking album. Vanessa Carlton weaves beautiful stories into a kaleidoscopic soundscape and takes you on a wonderful musical journey. If you like well crafted and exquisitely delivered songs, from a truly great singer song-writer, then this is for you.”

2. Rabbits On The Run

“Usually when an artist returns to the studio after a hiatus, the final musical product is disappointing. I’m glad to say that this is not the case with Rabbits on the Run. In fact, this album is far better than any of her three previous records. The organic sound, impeccable songwriting, ghostly children’s choir, heavenly melodies, and overall beauty of the album sets it apart as one of the greatest albums of all time.”

1. Be Not Nobody

Be Not Nobody was a spellbinding debut for piano-pop ballerina Vanessa Carlton, and its music still stands as some of the greatest female pop songs of the 2000s. Her voice is pure, sweet, and smooth and gives each song a chance to show off her simple, beautiful talent. The album has a lighter feel than her more recent music, but its sound still serves as a breath of fresh air among all the synthesizers and club beats that crept into a lot of other artists’ new work.”
