Wax Bird finally let the beast out on new single ‘Kingdom Down’

Wax Bird have spent nearly eight years building their identity around raw alternative and garage-rock, but ‘Kingdom Down’ sounds like the moment they decided to stop keeping the heavier parts of themselves under control.

Here, the Karlsruhe trio push into screamo and metal territory through the natural escalation of their own rehearsal-room chemistry. Charlie Brugger’s bass and vocals, Rouven Fetsch’s drums and Markus Gronbach’s guitar all hit with more aggression than before, while the melodic backbone that has always anchored the band remains firmly intact.

‘Kingdom Down’ is loud, cynical and deliberately unruly, but it never feels like they are borrowing heaviness for effect. The band have been clear that the song grew from their own live energy, and that authenticity comes through in the way the track moves.

Lyrically, the song is a sarcastic response to a world that feels permanently on fire. Personal stress, global absurdity and the frustration of watching the same systems grind people down all feed into a track that treats rebellion with equal parts anger and dark humour.

Recorded with Philipp Wilhelm at Substage Studio in Karlsruhe, the band deliberately preserved the roomy, live feel that defines their shows. They gave themselves an entire weekend to experiment, rebuild parts and follow ideas without rushing; even running a clarinet through guitar overdrive at one point and discovering something they described as an “angry bagpipe”.

In all, ‘Kingdom Down’ feels playful in its extremity, the sound of a band discovering that getting louder, messier and slightly more unhinged may actually bring them closer to who they are onstage. This is Wax Bird allowing their live identity to finally spill fully into the studio; delivering something bruising, chaotic and completely unwilling to behave in the process.
