4 Songs Ranked

4, also known as Foreigner 4, is the fourth studio album by the British-American rock band Foreigner, released on July 2, 1981, on Atlantic Records. Several singles from the album were hits, including “Urgent”, “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and “Juke Box Hero”. The album was a success worldwide, holding the #1 position on the Billboard album chart for a total of 10 weeks. It eventually sold over six million copies in the US alone. The album was originally titled Silent Partners and later was changed to 4, reflecting both the fact that it was Foreigner’s fourth album and that the band was now down to four members. In 1981, art studio Hipgnosis was asked to design a cover based on the original title, and they developed a black and white image of a young man in bed with a pair of binoculars suspended in the air overhead. The resulting design was rejected by the band as they felt it was “too homosexual”. The replacement cover for 4 was designed by Bob Defrin and modeled after an old-fashioned film leader. Hipgnosis is still credited with designing the record labels. Here are all 4 songs ranked. Here are all of 4 songs ranked.

10. I’m Gonna Win

“This song has a soundtrack feel to it and it could’ve been easily penned on a Rocky or Karate Kid Soundtrack although it’s one of the weaker moments on the album”

9. Luanne

“The first half closes with the almost Beatles sounding rocker “Luanne” which is a great song. This is a mid-tempo pop/rock song and this was also released as a minor hit single reaching #75 on the charts and this song is deserves more recognition.”

6. Don’t Let Go

“I was surprised that this song wasn’t released as a hit single and this is actually my favorite song off of the album, this song is a mid tempo pop/rock song, this is one of Foreigner’s most underrated songs.”

5. Break It Up

“This song is like a cross between of Cold as Ice and Blue Morning, Blue Day and they were both the 2nd songs off of the first two albums respectively and this song was a moderate hit reaching the Top 30 although it didn’t appear on most of the ‘Best Of’ CD’s.”

4. Waiting for a Girl Like You

“This is one of the most beautiful songs that I’ve ever heard and this song was actually Foreigner’s first Top 10 hit in the UK and this song still gets heavy adult comptemporary airplay, I was saddened that this song didn’t get the #1 spot when it should of.”

3. Night Life

“The album begins with a harder paced rocker about the night life in a big city and I don’t think that this is a good way to start off the album (I would’ve chosen Juke Box Hero as the album opener) but the lyrics are good.”

2. Urgent

“Although you may not believe this but I actually cannot stand this song although it was the first single off of this album, I started off liking this song but I got tired of it after awhile, sorry Foreinger fans, but to be nice since I am a fan of Foreinger, I’m going to give it a decent score.”

1. Juke Box Hero

“This is one of the heaviest songs Foreigner has ever recorded and this song is a classic, I love it when it starts off soft then it gets hard, I think that it’s cool when songs are like that.”
